CALGARY – For a second consecutive night, the University of Manitoba Bisons (2-0-0) defence stymied the University of Calgary Dinos (0-2-0) as they picked up a 2-0 win at Father David Bauer Arena on Saturday night.
BOX SCORE
Goals by Chris Benias and Jared Walker at the end of the second and the beginning of the third proved to be the difference as the Dinos get swept in a home series in regulation time for the first time since Nov. 7-8, 2008 – also by the Manitoba Bisons.
Neither team was able to light the lamp in an opening period that saw plenty of feisty play by both sides. Goaltending was solid at both ends of the rink as
Kris Lazaruk turned aside 11 shots, while Joe Caligiuri stopped seven.
As the game began to open up late in the second period, Manitoba ended the scoreless deadlock at the 15:36 mark. While on the power play, Benias scored on a low shot from the left short side that beat Lazaruk through the legs to make It 1-0. It was the first goal of the campaign for Benias.
At 2:44 of the final frame, the Bisons doubled their lead as Jared Walker broke through the slot and notched his second goal in as many nights with a quick shot over the shoulder of the Dinos' goaltender.
After Manitoba took a late penalty, Calgary went on a six-on-four advantage for the remainder of the game. The Dinos buzzed around the offensive zone with some of their best possession time of the night, but were unable to get anything past Caligiuri as the second-year netminder collected his second straight shutout.
The Bisons outshot the Dinos 28-21. Calgary went 0-9 on the man advantage, while Manitoba went 1-5.
Following a bye next weekend, Manitoba heads back to Alberta when they face the Golden Bears in Edmonton for a two-game set. Calgary will travel west next weekend where they will play two games against the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds on Oct. 7-8. The Dinos return home on Oct. 22 when they take on Alberta.
