Standings wacky after Dinos, Pandas draw

| By:
EDMONTON - The Canada West field hockey standings took another weird turn on Saturday, October 1, when the Alberta Pandas and Calgary Dinos tied 1-1 at Foote Field in Edmonton.

With the tie, the two teams remained tied for second place, which unto itself is out of the norm, but adding to the confusion is the fact that last place Victoria beat first place UBC 3-0, which means that Alberta and Calgary gained ground on the T-Birds, but lost ground to the Vikes.

Two Canada West teams, plus host Calgary, advance to the CIS championship tournament in November.

Alberta looked like they were going to secure their third win of the season when Jackie Trautman scored 17 minutes to the contest with Calgary, a goal that stood up for majority of the game.  Trautman, originally from Delta, BC, and a multiple CIS All-Canadian, notched her second goal in conference play when she connected on a short corner.

However, the Dinos leveled the score when Kaitlyn Longworth beat Alberta goalie Tory Spencer in the 43rd minute.

Neither squad could advance the score beyond the 1-1 finish, making Sunday's return match an important one for the Pandas.  Although UBC lost today, they remain two points ahead of the Pandas and Dinos, while Victoria suddenly is just one point out of second place.  An Alberta win on Sunday over Calgary leaves the Pandas alone in second place, with Calgary and Victoria battling for third and fourth place.  However, if the Dinos finish last, only the top two teams will advance to nationals, making it vitally important for the Pandas to pick up a win this weekend.

Sunday's match begins at 1:00 pm at Foote Field.
