CALGARY – The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades defeated the University of Calgary Dinos 76-60 Friday night in the Jack Simpson Gym to open the second half of the 2010-11 Canada West women's basketball season.
BOX SCORE
Three-point shooting was the story as the Cascades were 13-29 while the Dinos were a mere 3-18.
Tessa Klassen of Fraser Valley led all scorers with 17 points on 6-11 shooting. Alyssa Gaukel scored 13, Courtney Bartel 12, and Aiesha Luyken 10 as Fraser Valley won their seventh consecutive conference game after opening the season 0-6.
Calgary's
Tamara Jarrett scored 15 points and
Alex Cole added 14 as the Dinos dropped to 3-8, three games behind the Cascades for the eighth and final playoff spot in Canada West.
Fraser Valley came flying out of the gate as Gaukel scored 8 points in the first four minutes to pace the Cascades to a 13-4 lead. Fraser Valley's crisp passing coupled with Calgary's inability to defend on the perimeter resulted in numerous open looks, and the Cascades capitalized on 47% 3-point shooting to lead 44-32 at half.
Calgary entered the second half intent on cutting into the deficit, but 29 turnovers on the night prevented the Dinos from developing any momentum. Dinos head coach
Shawnee Harle liberally substituted all evening in search of a line-up to break her squad's lethargy, but nothing seemed to work. The limited success Calgary had was mostly the result of strong post play from Cole, who was very effective with her back to the hoop, shooting 5-6 from the field.
“We got outplayed in every way, shape, and form on both ends of the court tonight,” said Dinos head coach Shawnee Harle. “Credit has to go to Fraser Valley – they shot well, they defended well, they had a lot of people chip in, and they were definitely the better team tonight. The good news is that tomorrow's a new day, and we get another kick at them.”
The Dinos managed to reduce the lead to 10 points early in the fourth quarter, but were unable to get any closer. Fraser Valley used three quick scores to return the lead to sixteen, and Klassen did a good job of managing the clock from there to ease the Cascades to victory.
Calgary will attempt to regroup for the back end of their home weekend series with Fraser Valley Saturday night at 6 p.m. MT.
