Huskies double up Dinos

SASKATOON - Needing a victory to keep up in the Canada West standings, the No. 7 University of Saskatchewan Huskies doubled up the visiting University of Calgary Dinos 6-3 Friday night at Saskatoon's Rutherford Rink.

With the victory, combined with a University of Manitoba Bisons' loss, the Huskies (12-7-0) move to 24 points on the season. The point total puts Saskatchewan in a tie with both the Bisons (10-5-4) and Dinos for second place in the conference standings. The Dinos drop to 11-7-2 with the loss.

Special teams were on display for both teams. Travis Brisebois scored two shorthanded goals and Andrew Bailey added a power play goal for the Huskeis, while the Dinos scored all three goals on the power play.

Kyle Bortis opened the scoring in the game at 2:40 in the first period to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. The goal was the second-year forwards seventh in five games. Brisebois earned a break on a penalty kill scoring his team's second goal shorthanded with just one second left in the frame.

The Huskies and Dinos traded a pair of power play goals in the second period. Andrew Bailey hit the net at 12:37 for the Huskies and Cory Pritz beat Saskatchewan netminder David Reekie at 16:17.

Just 15 seconds into the third period, Huskie captain Kyle Ross slid the puck through the five-hole of reigning Canada West Male Athlete of the Week Dustin Butler to make the game 4-1. Michael Kaye added the Huskies fifth goal at 4:58. Reid Jorgensen found the net for Calgary at 9:05 on the power play, just 29 seconds before Brisebois would add his second shorthanded goal. Jerrid Sauer scored the Dinos' third goal on the power play at 13:00.

Reekie made 23 saves for the Huskies in the win, while Butler stopped 18 for the Dinos at the other end of the ice.

The two teams will meet again Saturday night at Rutherford Rink. Puck drop is 6 p.m. MT.
