EDMONTON - The University of Calgary Dinos picked up their 10 win of the season, and handed the No. 3-ranked Alberta Golden Bears their second straight loss, courtesy a hard fought 3-2 win Friday night - Calgary's first at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton since October 2006.
BOX SCORE
Freshman Dinos defenceman
Kodie Curran had three assists on the night while
Torrie Wheat,
Brock Nixon and
Aaron Richards all lit the Alberta lamp. Third-year puck-stopper
Dustin Butler, a former Prince Albert Raider, made 23 saves for the win, bumping his record to 7-5 on the season. He currently leads the conference in goals against average (2.08), and save percentage with a sparkling .931 rating.
Canada West rookie scoring leader Johnny Lazo tallied for Alberta, his seventh goal and 15 point in 19 games, as did defenceman Ben Lindemulder who picked up his second in conference play. Freshman goalie Kurtis Mucha made 20 saves in the loss, but still sports an 8-3 record for the Bears.
Calgary, owners of a 5-4-1 record in their last 10 games coming into Edmonton, opened up a 2-0 lead on the Bears early in the second period, and then fought off Alberta's comeback, dropping the Bears to a 4-5 record in their last nine conference tilts.
Nixon, originally from Russell, Man., started the scoring at 12:30 of the first, getting his fifth goal of the season from captain
Reid Jorgensen and Curran. The Dinos narrowly outshot the Bears 10-9 in the first.
Just 3:55 into the second frame, Calgary doubled their lead when Wheat beat Mucha on one of just four Dino shots on net that period.
Walker Wintoneak and Curran picked up the helpers.
Alberta seemed to find their stride late in the second period when Lazo scored on a breakaway, beating Butler low with a forehand-backhand deke at 12:43. Greg Gardner drew the lone assist, hitting Lazo at the Calgary blueline for the breakaway.
Minutes after the Lazo goal, defenceman Ian Barteaux blistered a slapshot past Butler, but also off the crossbar, and then freshman Mitch Czibere hit the post on a wrap around attempt as the Golden Bears gained some life from the Lazo goal.
Lindemulder, a CIS freshman and former Northern Michigan Wildcat, tied the score on the power-play, sifting a wrist-shot through a screen, and Butler's five-hole, at 6:14 of the third period. Derek Ryan and freshman Alex Rodgers picked up the extra-attacker assists.
Undaunted by the Alberta comeback, Calgary continued to press against the Bears, eventually getting the winner when Richards shoveled a loose puck past Mucha at 14:09, with Curran earning his third assist.
The game was the first in a home-and-series between the provincial rivals, and game two is Saturday night at 7 pm at Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.
