EDMONTON - Another day, another 2-0 loss for the University of Alberta Pandas at the hands of the University of Calgary Dinos, who swept the weekend series after their win on Sunday afternoon at Foote Field in Edmonton.
Alberta's four straight losses to open the season has them sitting last in the conference, giving them a tough hill to climb with a third of the season already gone. The 2-2 Dinos, however, are only one point behind the 2-1-1 UBC Thunderbirds, who sit in second place in the Canada West conference standings.
The Dinos opened the scoring on a penalty corner in the second half, with fourth-year midfielder
Courtney Campbell deking around an Alberta defender before shooting the ball high on the stick-side of Alberta netminder Tory Spencer in the 48th minute.
The third-year keeper kept the Pandas close for the rest of the game, even coming out of the net to challenge a shot by sophomore forward
Jessica Downie in the 56th minute, cleanly stacking the pads to keep the Calgary lead at one.
Alberta almost tied the game six minutes later when third-year forward Kinsco Santha backhanded a shot that narrowly missed the post of the Dino goal.
Calgary's
Kaitlyn Longworth cemented the victory for the road team, though, when she potted a long rebound through Spencer's five-hole with just over a minute remaining in the game.
The Pandas spend next weekend on the road to visit the UBC Thunderbirds in a two-game weekend series while the Dinos will return home to host the Victoria Vikes.
