SASKATOON - With two goals in the second half, the University of Calgary Dinos fought to a 2-2 tie with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Sunday at Saskatoon's Griffiths Stadium in PotashCorp Park.
BOX SCORE
The tie gives Calgary a point after going winless in their first three matches of the season. Calgary now sits 0-3-1 on the season, while the Huskies are 1-2-1.
“We started well and created some quality chances in the first half,” said Huskie head coach Tom LaPointe. “After we scored the second goal we let our foot off the gas and let Calgary back into the game. Hats off to the Dinos as they battled hard to earn the draw.”
Saskatchewan's Elizabeth Hudon opened the scoring with her fourth goal of the weekend when she was sprung on a ball by Jenna Newton. It slid just by Dinos' keeper
Kristen Barton on the ground into the left side of the net 12 minutes in to the match.
It wasn't until the second half that either team was able to find the net again. Hudon netted her second goal of the match on a ball sent straight to her by fellow striker Jamie LeMay in the 56th minute. But just two minutes later, on a scramble in front of the net, the Dinos were able to cut the lead in half on a goal by
Lauren Deeks. Huskie keeper Marissa Wilford couldn't find the ball amongst all the players crowded infront of her net.
Calgary tied the game in the 66th minute on a header by
Saaraa Premji on a ball from
Tessa Miller.
The Dinos outshot the Huskies 14-10 in the game. Wilford made seven saves for the Huskies, while Barton had three for the Dinos.
The Huskies hit the road next weekend to face the Trinity Western University Spartans and the UBC Thunderbirds, while the Dinos return home to host the University of Manitoba Bisons and the University of Regina Cougars.
