EDMONTON - Freshman striker Marcus Johnstone scored the first two goals of his CIS career, pacing the University of Alberta Golden Bears' soccer team to a 3-1 win over the previously unbeaten Calgary Dinos, Saturday afternoon at Foote Field in Edmonton.
BOX SCORE
Johnstone, originally from Edmonton, notched a goal in each half, adding to the lead that veteran Brett Colvin had provided in the first.
Fourth-year forward Jeremy Jenkyns scored the lone tally for the Dinos.
Colvin, who hails from Calgary, needed just 5:30 to score his second conference goal of the season, beating Dino keeper #J.P. Crescenzi# on partial breakaway, slotting the ball inside the far post. The play was set-up thanks to a give-and-go Colvin orchestrated with midfielder Sam Lam.
Johnstone scored his first career goal in the 39 minute, heading a crosspast Crescenzi, with an assist to Milan Timotijevic.
The goal put Alberta up 2-0, and proved to be the match winner.
Calgary drew one goal back in the 54 minute of the second half, when Jenkyns headed an Izak Lawerence cross beyond the reach of Alberta goalie Jas Gill.
Johnstone sealed the deal five and a half minutes later, taking a pass from Colvin, dancing around Crescenzi, and knocking the ball into the empty net.
The Golden Bears return to action Sunday afternoon at 2:15 when they host the 1-2 Lethbridge Pronghorns.
Calgary hits the road Sunday afternoon, playing the Saskatchewan Huskies in Saskatoon.
