OTTAWA - The seventh-seeded Calgary Dinos played their game, went to the free throw line, and got a stellar effort from Robbie "Superman" Sihota to upset the Cape Breton Capers 82-74 in the first quarterfinal at the 2010 CIS Final 8 Men's Basketball Championship at Scotiabank Place.

With the win, the Canada West finalist Dinos advance to the national semifinals for the second straight year. They will face the UBC Thunderbirds in the first of two semifinals Saturday night at 5 p.m. local (3 p.m. MT), live on TSN2 with audio at www.SSNCanada.ca.

Calgary lost 79-74 to conference foe UBC in the 2009 semis.

Atlantic conference champion Cape Breton will face the losers of the UBC-Lakehead match-up on the consolation side of the draw, Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

“It was a physical game. We had to play tough. But we expected that, once you get to nationals, it's always physical,” said Calgary native Sihota, who was named game MVP for the Dinos. “We were patient in the second half. We executed well both defensively and offensively.”

The Dinos, who led 21-16 after the first quarter, trailed 42-39 at the half and were up 61-55 after 30 minutes of play, had a 34-29 advantage on the boards, including 25-17 on the defensive end, and were sent to the free throw line 36 times compared to only 10 for their AUS rivals.

Calgary made 29 of its free throw attempts (80.6%), while Cape Breton went 4-for-10.

“They have some great athletes. We couldn't let them run all over the floor. We slowed down the game and I think it disrupted their tempo,” said 10-year Dinos head coach Dan Vanhooren.

Point guard Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson (pictured), a 5-foot-9 freshman from Winnipeg, tallied 17 points for the winners, while 6-foot-8 fifth-year forward Ross Bekkering of Taber, Alta., had 14 points, including 12 on 14 tries from the charity stripe. Six-foot-nine guard Tyler Fidler of Calgary, who played a team-high 38 minutes, also scored in double figures, finishing with 11 points.

All-star guard Jimmy Dorsey of Westminster, Maryland, was chosen player of the match for CBU after he paced Cape Breton with 19 points, including 15 on 5-for-9 shooting from beyond the arc. Fellow American-born guard Paris Carter of Baltimore scored 14.

“There was a big discrepancy in free throws. But full credit to them. They took us away from what we wanted to do,” said CBU head coach Jim Charters.

After shooting 54.7% from the floor in the first half, the Capers made only 31.7% of their field goal attempts after the break to finish at 41.7%. Calgary shot 47.2% on the afternoon.

The Dinos led all the way in the opening half until Dorsey's first three-pointer of the day gave Cape Breton a 35-32 advantage with 2:42 remaining before the intermission. The Capers were up 39-32 following an 11-0 run, en route to a three-point lead heading into the locker room.

Back from the break, the Dinos opened the third frame with a 10-0 run of their own to go back up by 49-42, and never looked back.

Dorsey kept it interesting in the final quarter, hitting back-to-back long balls midway through the stanza to bring the Capers back to within three at 68-65. He cut the Calgary lead to two, at 73-71, with another three-pointer with two minutes left, and hit one last time from beyond the arc to make it a four-point affair, at 78-74, with 53 seconds to go.
