OTTAWA – Their widely-anticipated post-season match-up didn't happen thanks to an upset win by Saskatchewan, but the Calgary Dinos and the UBC Thunderbirds will have to go through each other to reach the CIS national championship game.
Both the seventh-seeded Dinos and the No. 3 Thunderbirds won their opening-round games at the Final 8 at Scotiabank Place Friday, setting up Saturday night's all-Canada West semi-final. Calgary upset the No. 2 seed, Cape Breton, 82-74, while UBC used a 21-0 run in the third quarter to erase the Lakehead Thunderwolves 79-58.
Calgary and UBC will meet in the first of two Saturday night semi-finals, with tip-off at 5 p.m. local (3 p.m. MT). The game will be broadcast live on TSN2, with Rod Black and Leo Rautins calling play-by-play.
The other semi-final will see upstart Saskatchewan take on the winner of the late quarterfinal, which pits top-seeded and host Carleton against Quebec champion UQAM.
The Dinos will be looking for a little payback Saturday after bowing out to the T-Birds 79-74 in the national semi-final last season, after which UBC went on to lose the championship game to Carleton. The two foes met just once in 2009-10, back on Jan. 23 in the Jack Simpson Gym. Calgary held a 15-point lead at the half, but a big third quarter propelled UBC to a 79-71 victory.
BOX SCORE - Jan. 23: UBC 79 Calgary 71
Both teams led their respective division standings in Canada West on the regular season, but UBC fell to Saskatchewan in their conference semi-final. The Huskies then went on to defeat Calgary in the Canada West championship game, and UBC was given the wild card entry to the Final 8 in Ottawa.
The winner will advance to Sunday's championship game, with tip-off slated for 6:30 p.m. local (4:30 p.m. MT), also on TSN2.
