TORONTO - For the first time in the storied history of University of Calgary swimming, the Dinos were victorious in both the men's and women's competition in the same season, bringing home both national championship banners from the CIS Swimming Championships at the University of Toronto.

After holding just a slim 24-point lead over the host Toronto Varsity Blues on the men's side heading into Day 3 of the event, the Dinos dominated in the morning preliminaries to ensure the final team victory. Calgary's advantage in the overall standings stretched to more than 100 points at one point during Saturday night's finals before finishing at a comfortable 85.5 points, 636.5 against Toronto's 551. The Dinos women, meanwhile, dominated the field with their 140-point victory, 679-539 over UBC.
“What a day!” enthused Dinos head coach
Mike Blondal, who was ceremonially tossed into the pool after being named the CIS women's coach of the year. “We just got more and more relentless as the day went on. The men put it away this morning, giving us enough swims tonight and they (Toronto) couldn't touch us.
“It was really exciting and really cool at the end to see the men and the women win together.”
The Dinos' domination in the preliminaries is fleshed out in the final results of the men's 200 individual medley. Calgary qualified four swimmers for the 'A' final and another pair for the 'B' final, scoring 70 team points in that event alone – led by a silver medal performance from
Colin Miazga.
Saturday's final day of competition was highlighted by a new Canadian national record in the women's 4x100-metre medley relay. The quartet of
Katy Murdoch,
Allison Long,
Seanna Mitchell, and
Erica Morningstar stopped the clock in 4:03.28, shaving 23 hundredths off the national mark already held by Murdoch, Long, and Morningstar.. Despite the new rules regarding swimming suits and the resulting slower times across the board, however, Blondal was not surprised with that record setting performance.
“Those four girls really went after it, and it's something we knew they were capable of,” he said. “Any record that you get without the suits is pretty impressive, and to do it at the end of the meet when they're all tired like that was pretty cool.”
Fatigue didn't seem to bother Calgary's
Erica Morningstar, who swam the final freestyle leg of the relay and helped set the record despite winning gold medals in both of the events immediately preceding it – the 100-metre freestyle and the 200-metre individual medley. Morningstar successfully defended her CIS titles in both events, bringing her individual career total to eight gold medals in eight CIS races. Earlier in the weekend, she struck gold in the 50-metre freestyle and the 100-metre breaststroke.
Morningstar became the first back-to-back winner of the Sprinter's Cup award, which is presented to a swimmer that wins both the 50- and 100-metre freestyle events at the CIS championship, since it was instituted in 1994. Toronto's Colin Russell, who was named the male Swimmer of the Year, won the men's Sprinter's Cup, also for the second consecutive year.
Despite her four gold medals, Morningstar lost out on Swimmer of the Year honours to UBC's Martha McCabe, whose victory in the 200-metre breaststroke earned a higher FINA point total with a lightning-fast time of 2:21.91.
The Dinos did manage to leave with both Rookie of the Year honours in tow thanks to sparkling performances by
Allison Long and
Bogdan Knezevic. Long becomes the fifth consecutive Calgary swimmer to win the women's rookie of the year award, following in the footsteps of Murdoch (2006),
Kevyn Peterson (2007),
Breanna Hendriks (2008), and Morningstar (2009). Long placed in the top five of all three breaststroke events, finishing fourth in the 100 and fifth in the 200. But she capped off the weekend in impressive fashion, taking gold in the 50-metre breaststroke by a whopping margin of .67 seconds in a time of 31.30.
Knezevic, meanwhile, becomes the first Dinos swimmer to win the male freshman award since its introduction in 2003, though former Dino Chad Hankewich did capture the inaugural award while swimming for Regina. Swimming in his hometown of Toronto, Knezevic won bronze in the 100 breaststroke and finished sixth in the 200-metre event. He also added a silver medal swimming the anchor of Calgary's 4 x 200-metre freestyle relay on Friday.
Morningstar and Long were joined atop the podium Saturday by Peterson in the 800-metre freestyle Murdoch in the 200-metre backstroke, and
Jason Block in the men's 50-metre breaststroke. It was the third win in as many breaststroke events for Block, who leaves the CIS championships with a trio of individual golds after his wins in the 100- and 200-metre events earlier in the weekend.
In total, the Dinos added 14 medals to their total on Saturday, bringing the three-day tally to 35.
The championships are the 39th and 40th in the University of Calgary's history. It is the second straight national title for the Dinos women, while the men re-gain their title after last winning in 2008. It is the Dinos' 14th CIS men's swimming championship overall, putting them two back of Toronto's 16 national championships.
Calgary will enjoy another program first in 2010-11 when the Dinos play host to the CIS championships for the first time – and they will enter that meet as defending champions.
