Horns shut out Dinos

| By:
LETHBRIDGE, Alta. - The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns closed out their home schedule with a 3-0 victory over the University of Calgary Dinos in Lethbridge on Friday night.  Pronghorns senior goalie Kailey McMaster stood tall in between the pipes in her last start at Nicholas Sheran Arena, stopping all 20 shots on goal and picking up her first shutout of the season and third of her career in the process.

BOX SCORE

In addition to the departure of McMaster, the Horns also said goodbye to graduating players Kimberley Ehrhardt, Charlette Hainer, and captain Kendal Tremblay.

The Horns opened up the scoring at 16:21 of the opening period, thanks to a highlight reel goal from Dayna Janzen.  Janzen made several nifty moves to get open in the slot before wiring a snap shot past the blocker of Dinos netminder Jennifer Mallard and off of the crossbar and in.  The Horns went into the first intermission outshooting their southern Alberta rivals by a 9-4 margin.

Horns leading goal scorer Brittney Kaye notched her 7th of the year on the power play near the midway point of the second period.  Kaye stopped an Amy Van Buskirk point shot in its tracks and deked past a down and out Mallard to put the home side up by a pair.  McMaster continued to stand tall for the Horns, stopping all 7 shots put her way in the second period and not allowing many rebounds in the process.  Meanwhile, her Calgary counterpart stopped 10 of 11 Horns attempts in the frame.

Calgary had their best chance to cut into the Horns lead four minutes into the final frame as Elana Lovell chipped a shot off of and the over the mask of McMaster.  The puck came dangerously close to the line before Horns captain Kendal Tremblay cleared it out of danger and preserved McMasters' shutout bid.  The Horns rounded out the scoring shortly after thanks to a shorthanded marker by Janzen.  While down a man, the Horns worked the puck around the Dinos zone before Amy Van Buskirk let loose a cannon from the point.  While her shot was wide of the mark, Janzen was in perfect position to corral the puck off the end boards and slip a wrist shot through the five hole of Mallard.  McMaster was the busier of the two goalies in the third period, facing nine shots while the Horns only managed three on Mallard.

With both teams already being eliminated from the Canada West playoff picture, the two teams will wrap up the 2009-10 campaign tomorrow night in Calgary.  The game is a matinee affair at Calgary's Father David Bauer Arena with puck drop scheduled for 3 p.m.
