Fidler's big night not enough

WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the University of Calgary Dinos 78-67 in their home opener of the 2010-2011 regular season Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The Wesmen coming off a regular season opening loss at Manitoba last Saturday, improve their record to 1-1. Calgary drops below .500 to 2-3.

Benny Iko led the Wesmen registering a double-double (18 points, 10 rebounds). Guard Nolan Gooding finished with 16 points, five assists and four steals. Kelvin Smith added 12 points and Lynden Drayton-Barrow had 11 points.

Calgary was led by Tyler Fidler's game high 20 points and 19 rebounds. Keenan Milburn added 11 points and three assists.

The game was close in the opening quarter with neither team leading by more than three points. Winnipeg led after the opening quarter 17-16.

The second quarter started out close but with Calgary holding on to a 20-19 lead, early in the quarter Winnipeg reeled off ten straight points - six by Benny Iko - in a three-minute span to take a 29-20 lead. Winnipeg continued to outplay the Dinos and went into the halftime break with a 43-31 lead.

Winnipeg connected on 47% from the field in the opening half, Calgary connected on 38%. Benny Iko had 16 points and six rebounds in the opening half.

After the halftime break, Calgary came out on fire in the third. The Dinos outscored the Wesmen 16-4 in the opening 6:30 to tie the score at 47-47. Winnipeg regrouped and led by Nolan Gooding's seven points, outscored Calgary 13-1 down the stretch to regain their double digit lead at 60-48 after three quarters.

Winnipeg remained in front in the fourth quarter in double digits and went on to win their home opener 78-67.

The two teams will meet again at the Duckworth Centre on Saturday night. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. MT.
