Anemic Dinos fall to Wesmen

WINNIPEG - A total team effort lifted the Winnipeg Wesmen to a hard fought 60-56 victory over the University of Calgary Dinos Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Every player on the Wesmen roster hit the scoresheet to figure in the victory and improve the teams record to 2-0 early on in the Canada West regular season. Calgary falls to 1-4.

Fifth year guard Catie Gooch led the Wesmen with a game high 15 points, including four-three pointers. First year guard Stephanie Kleysen had her second consecutive double-double scoring ten points and hauling down a game high 15 rebounds. Gooch and Kleysen contributed on defense with six and five steals respectiveley.

Kiersten Hilton led Calgary with 11 points. Megan Lang added 10 points, six assists and six steals. Alex Cole led the team in rebounds with nine.

Winnipeg gained the early advantage in a tight opening quarter. Both teams relied on strong defensive play as the Wesmen led 13-8 after the opening ten minutes of play.

Calgary fought back in the second quarter outscoring the Wesmen 19-17 to go into the halftime break trailing 30-27. Calgary was successfull on 42% of their shots from the field in the opening half, Winnipeg finished at 28%.

The defensive battle between the two Canada West rivals continued in the second half, with the Wesmen outscoring Calgary 30-29 in the final twenty minutes.

Calgary and Winnipeg will close out their two game weekend series Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Tip off is scheduled for 5 p.m. MT.

Notes: Both teams finished with 39 total rebounds, Winnipeg had the edge on the offensive side with 21 compared to 12 for the Dinos. Winnipeg had 18 steals, Calgary 11.
