Barrage of threes sinks Bobcats

| By:

CALGARY – Using a carbon copy game plan from Friday's game against Brandon University and 16 three point shots, the University of Calgary Dinos once again earned a lopsided victory over the Bobcats, winning 99-43 at home.

Showing off their offensive versatility for the second straight night, Calgary once again seemed to wear down the Bobcats with their team speed and depth, using an excellent fast-break attack to generate easy transition buckets. Calgary shot an impressive 44% from the three point line, with nine different Dinos contributing a long range shot.

To have an efficient fast break attack, a team must be unselfish and smart with the basketball, which the Dinos did an outstanding job of. Calgary had 25 assists on their 37 total field goals on Saturday, and nearly everyone managed a point in the game for the Dinos.

Calgary came out to their second straight hot start, leading 18-1 at one point of the first frame before rolling to a 34-8 finish to the first ten minutes. The Dinos shot a blistering 57% from the three point line in the first quarter, with Ashley Hill going five for five on her own, compared to only 23% from the entire field for Brandon.

Hill led the Dinos once again, nailing seven shots from downtown for a game-high 21 points, while Tamara Jarrett followed with 15 points and five steals. Tilly Ettinger added six points and a game high six assists, and Megan Lang added seven points, all coming consecutively to end a tight second quarter.

Brandon was led by Katie Van de Sype, who had 14 points and four rebounds, and Madison Bradbury, who chipped in 12.

Brandon couldn't match Calgary's output from long-range where they went 2 for 17, and had 28 turnovers to boot. While they still didn't win the rebounding battle, the Bobcats certainly did better than Friday's effort, with Nicisha Johnson and Kelsey Solarchuk each adding six boards.

Head coach Shawnee Harle was once again quite satisfied with the Dinos work ethic on Saturday night.

“I loved the pace of the game, we were really able to push the ball in transition,” said the 16 year head coach.

“Our offence though, is never in question, we know we can score” continued Harle. “Our focus is has been on our defence in practice, and it's starting to show. I was really happy to see that.”

With the victory, Calgary (3-5) will now head to Regina next weekend to finish off their fall semester schedule, while the Brandon Bobcats (0-8) head to Winnipeg for a series against one of their in-province rivals, the Manitoba Bisons.
