Dinos women win Canada West cross country title

| By:
SHERBROOKE, Que. – The University of Calgary Dinos women captured their sixth Canada West cross country championship in eight years while the men finished a close second in the conference results at the CIS Cross Country Championships Saturday afternoon at the Club de golf de Sherbrooke.

FULL RESULTS
Men:   CIS    Canada West
Women:   CIS    Canada West

The Canada West championships are held in conjunction with the CIS championships, with the same race deciding both the conference and national titles.

Led by a first team All-Canadian performance by Madeline MacDonald, who finished second in the Canada West race and sixth at the CIS level, the Dinos women put five runners in the top 40 to grab third place nationally. Those five athletes – MacDonald, Faye Stenning, Grace Kary, Debby Querengesser, and Emma Hann – all ended up in the top 15 in the Canada West results, giving the Dinos a six-point victory over second-place Victoria.

Dinos head coach Doug Lamont was named the Canada West women's coach of the year.

On the men's side, Scott Nicol's time of 33:23 in the 10-kilometre event was good enough for 16th in the national race and fifth in Canada West. Matt Cloutier, Spencer Pootz, Curtis Merry, and Sam Dorosz also cracked the top 50 in the CIS race. The Calgary men lost out on the conference title by just eight points to the University of Victoria Vikes.

The Guelph Gryphons captured both the men's and women's national banners for the fifth consecutive season. For the Guelph women, it was their sixth straight CIS championship.

Before the event, the Dinos' Sam Dorosz was named the CIS student-athlete community service award winner.

As the president of the Biomedical Engineering Students' Society, Dorosz provides leadership and organizational direction. He runs weekly meetings, interacts with faculty members, acquires funding for student trips and seminars, and plans both academic (lab tours, seminars, industry panel, etc.) and social events.

For the last two years, he has been a speaker at the fall University of Calgary Open house, talking with high school students regarding both university academics and lifestyle.

“Sam is extremely committed to everything that he takes on in life. It is full speed ahead in all aspects of his life,” said Calgary coach Doug Lamont. “He is a very coachable young man and he is dedicated to both his athletic success and his team's success.”
