WINNIPEG - With revenge on their minds the No. 5 University of Manitoba Bisons men's hockey team had to work overtime for the second straight night against the No. 10 Calgary Dinos at the Max Bell Arena Saturday. The result of their efforts was a 2-1 shootout win, avenging the loss by the same score the previous night.
BOX SCORE
Once again both teams played strong defensively and had help from their goaltenders at key points in the game, and Greg Beller was the hero for the Herd on this night, beating Calgary goaltender
Dustin Butle on his shootout attempt.
“It was a great series. Two good teams played two great games this weekend,” said Bisons head coach Mike Sirant. “We found a way to win tonight. We got three points out of four this weekend. Unfortunately for us, but good for Calgary, they also got three points.”
Sirant was also pleased that the team's level of competitiveness stayed at a high level.
“We're getting some consistency in our performances,” he said. “We won a hard-fought game in Lethbridge, picked up the sweep in Regina, then had this series against Calgary. It's really good to see.”
The Bisons had the majority of the scoring chances in the opening period, but just as he did the night before, Butler frustrated Bisons shooters in the first period. First with a sprawling glove save in the opening minutes, then a shorthanded breakaway stop on fifth-year Bisons forward Nolan Waker.
Both teams took two minor penalties in the opening frame, but that was the only way the scoreboard would be lit in the first 20 minutes, as the two teams remained scoreless heading into the second period.
It seemed the second period would go the same as the first, but just over the halfway mark, Mike Hellyer was able to make good on a rebound given out by Butler, who made a last-second dive to try and stop the chance with the paddle of his stick, but to no avail. Kyle Howarth would pick up the assist on the Hellyer marker.
However, eight minutes later the Dinos would even things up on a nice passing play finished off by
Reid Jorgensen, with assists going to
Kodie Curran and
Cory Pritz. The score would stay tied at one after 40 minutes, setting the stage for the third period.
The third period didn't have any scoring from either of the teams, but plenty of confrontations in front of the net resulting in a total of 26 penalty minutes throughout the final 20 minutes. But neither team would take advantage of any power play opportunities, and for the second night in a row, the game would go into overtime.
In the extra frame the Bisons had one powerplay, but couldn't manage to get one past Butler, sending the game to a shootout.
For the second night in a row, the Dinos' second shooter was able to beat Bisons netminder Steve Christie, but Tyler Dittmer was able to keep the shootout alive, becoming the first Bisons shooter to beat Butler in a shootout this weekend. Greg Beller would become the second as the eleventh shooter, and Christie was able to stop Pritz from the Dinos to pick up the win for the Herd.
The Bisons (6-2-2) travel to UBC over the Nov. 19-20 weekend, while the Dinos (6-4-2) have a bye week.
