CALGARY – The 3-2-1 field hockey Dinos head west to Vancouver this weekend for a pair of games against the 4-1-1 UBC Thunderbirds, and their performance on the coast could go a long way to determining if their playoff aspirations will become a reality.
Calgary is currently battling with UBC and Victoria for the top two positions in Canada West. The Dinos are a mere two points shy of conference-leading UBC and sit a single point back of the Vikes for the final Canada West spot at the CIS championship next month in Guelph, Ont.
The Dinos are riding a point streak of four consecutive games, having allowed only a single goal over that stretch. This past weekend, the Dinos defended their home turf well versus Victoria.
Keara Chicquen tallied for the Dinos in a 1-0 victory Saturday, and
Penny Cuthbert scored a second-half equalizer to salvage a 1-1 tie on Sunday.
UBC is coming off dominating performances against winless Alberta. Shanlee Johnston and Kira Graham found the scoresheet twice apiece as the Thunderbirds easily disposed of the Pandas by 3-0 and 3-1 scores.
The Dinos and Thunderbirds opened the season against each other in Calgary, with UBC taking both contests. The Dinos will attempt to build on their momentum when the teams renew acquaintances this Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. MT.
