Vikes wrap up season with win, Dinos prep for playoffs

| By:
VICTORIA - The UVic Vikes men's soccer team ended the 2010 regular season with their third straight win, defeating the playoff-bound Calgary Dinos 2-1.

BOX SCORE

While the Vikes were eliminated from post-season contention long ago, they thwarted Calgary's bid to jump into the No. 2 spot for the playoffs. The Dinos, who finish at 8-4-2, will enter next weekend's Canada West championship as the No. 3 seed.

It ended up not mattering anyway - the Dinos will play the UBC Thunderbirds in the conference semi-final next week, and would have done so even with a win over the Vikes.

Wes Barrett scored both Vikes' goals, bumping his season total to four and leading the team for 2010. Barrett's first score on Sunday came in the 31st minute on a low-lying strike. The Richmond native's second came on a well-timed header via James Rhodes' crossing ball in the 63rd minute.

Calgary broke the Vikes' shutout bid in the 74th minute. Hani Abdelkader setup Christian Lorenzoni's strike, which the Toronto native tucked just inside the crossbar on the top right corner. The Dinos attacked aggressively in the final stages but could not pocket the equalizer.

The Vikes end the regular season 4-9-1, and by missing by the playoffs ensure there will be a new Canada West champion in 2010. The Vikes won the last two conference crowns.

Calgary (8-4-2) heads to Edmonton next weekend for the Canada West Final Four, where they will face UBC in a semi-final Saturday, Nov. 6 at 2:15 p.m.
