CALGARY – Becky Heninger's 16 points and 5 steals led the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns to a 64-52 victory over the University of Calgary Dinos Saturday night at the Jack Simpson Gymnasium.
BOX SCORE
Lauren Taal chipped in a dozen points of her own as the Pronghorns earned a weekend series split and improved to 2-2 on the season. Calgary drops to 1-3.
Calgary had an awful time at the offensive end all night, shooting a mere 29 percent from the field, including 8-of-37 from in the first half.
Alex Cole was the Dinos' top scorer with 10 points, while
Ashley Hil was held to 8 points on 3-of-13 shooting after lighting up the Pronghorns for 34 the night before. However, Dinos head coach
Shawnee Harle was more disappointed with her team's effort at the defensive end that allowed the Pronghorns to shoot 48 percent in the second half.
“On nights where your offense isn't clicking, your defense has to be willing to get down and dirty to keep you in the game, and early in the season I'm still searching for a line-up that's willing to do so”.
Lethbridge led 26-20 at halftime on the strength of great guard play from Heninger, whose all-court game caused havoc for the Dinos all night. She maintained her high level of play early in the third when she ripped the ball away from
Tamara Jarrett under the Dinos basket and went up strong to earn two points and a free throw, resulting in a jubilant fist pump.
Despite their struggles, the Dinos managed to keep the deficit to single digits most of the evening. They entered the fourth quarter with an opportunity to eliminate it entirely, but came out flat and did not score for the first three minutes. Kenzie Sheen nailed an uncontested three-pointer with 3:25 remaining that triggered a 9-0 run for the Horns to end any hope of a Dinos comeback.
“I thought Lethbridge was the better team tonight,” conceded Harle. “As a young team we're still learning, and we definitely struggled finishing under the basket, but I'm most disappointed at the lack of fight I saw from our team towards the end of the game when the going got tough.”
Calgary will look to redeem themselves on the road next weekend when they play a pair of games against the University of Winnipeg. Lethbridge will attempt to win consecutive games for the first time this season when they travel to Regina for a series with the Cougars.
