Stingy Bears fend off Dinos

| By:
EDMONTON - The No. 1-ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears hockey team squeezed out another tight victory over their provincial rivals, the University of Calgary Dinos, this time by virtue of a 2-1 score line Saturday night at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton.

BOX SCORE

Fifth-year winger Chad Klassen had a goal and assist for the Bears, and JP Szaszkiewicz notched the game winning goal in the second period.  Red-hot center Derek Ryan had a pair of assists in the win, as he and Klassen continue to own the Canada West scoring race.  Klassen now has 20 points in eight games on Ryan's wing, while the Spokane native has 13 assists and 19 points.

Calgary captain Reid Jorgensen, who came into the weekend having scored six points in his previous five games, scored the Dinos' lone goal.    The fourth-year Vancouver born forward had two-points on the weekend, and he sits tied for third in Canada West scoring with 10 points.

One night earlier in Calgary, the Golden Bears escaped with a 5-4 shootout win, but needed Klassen to score with 18 seconds remaining in the third just to extend it.  Sophomore center Sean Ringrose was the only player to score in the shootout, cementing the win.

It was Jorgensen who opened the scoring on Saturday night as he swooped down the wing, past an Alberta defender, and snapped a shot on net that got under the arm of Bears' goalie Real Cyr for a 1-0 lead at the 6:27 mark of the first.  Torrie Wheat and Brock Nixon picked up the assists.

Klassen got that goal back six and a half minutes later with Alberta on the power-play, just one of three opportunities for the Bears, in a game that featured just four man advantages in total.  The Saskatoon native took a feed from Ryan from behind the net and beat Calgary goalie Kris Lazaruk for the tie score.

The pair also connected on Alberta's winning goal, which came at the 5:45 mark of the second period, a frame dominated by the Bears.

After outshooting Calgary 12-6 in the first period, the Bears took the game over in the middle stanza, pumping 18 pucks on net and only giving up four shots in return.  They went on to outshoot their guests 35-17, and surely would have scored more were it not for the steady play of Lazaruk, who earned second star status on the night.

One of those 18 second period shots was JP Szaszkiewicz's third goal of the season, and eighth point, as the former Edmonton Oil King snapped home a loose puck past a sprawling Lazaruk during a goal mouth scramble.  With that goal, the third-year forward set a career high in points in a season, beating the seven he notched in 2009-10.

Although the Bears had all the momentum heading into the third, they couldn't solve Lazaruk for a third goal, and were in fact, also stymied on three shots on Calgary's empty net in the final minutes as Dino defenders blocked, or tipped empty goal attempts wide, preserving the 2-1 finish.

Calgary, who dropped two games to Alberta at the beginning of October, move to a 4-3-1 record, while the Bears improve to 7-1-0.

Alberta has a bye week to start November, while the Dinos return home to face the Saskatchewan Huskies.
