CALGARY - Breaking out of her slump in a big way, University of Calgary forward $
Tessa Miller$ scored twice in the matter of a minute, leading her Dinos to a 3-0 victory over the visiting Lethbridge Pronghorns.
BOX SCORE
With both Miller and forward
Morena Ianniello hovering over a free kick in the 35th minute, Miller sent a short pass from Ianniello just inside the top right corner of the net. The beautifully-placed strike put the Dinos up 1-0.
Not even a minute later Miller would attack again, shedding a defender after a
Caitlin Milne pass to get a wide open look at the Pronghorns net, making no mistake on the high strike.
Miller, who scored 12 goals in her first two years as a Dino, came into Sunday's match without a scoring marker in 2010, and the two goal outburst definitely dropped a weight from her shoulders.
“I am so relieved,” said the third-year forward. “I hadn't scored yet this year and I was starting to feel like I wasn't doing my job for the team.:I'm really glad that I could personally help us today.”
Calgary would get a third goal from first year Dino #Deanna Fidler,# who deflected in a long cross from Miller that got behind Lethbridge goaltender Jalissa Johnstone midway through the second half.
The Dinos completely outplayed the Horns offensively, out-shooting the visitors by a 21-4 margin. Ianniello lead the Dinos with seven shots on goal with several very good opportunities, while midfielder
Lindsay Burrowes had five.
Lethbridge had four different players register a shot, with Jaclyn and Janelle Groten leading the way.
Miller attributed the offensive push to a much more composed collective effort.
“We have lots of really talented players, and I think we just used our skill much better today,” said Miller. “We were calm and we controlled the play and as a result we got a lot of offensive pressure.”
Kristen Barton picks up the victory and the shutout in a quiet four save performance. Lethbridge goalkeeper Jaleesa Johnston stopped 18 total shots in a terrific effort despite the three goals against, as all three came in situations where she had no real chance at the ball.
Both Calgary and Lethbridge will take a bye week over the Thanksgiving weekend before heading on the road to face the Manitoba Bisons and the Regina Cougars on Octo. 16-17.
