Lovell's OT winner snaps 11-year losing skid

| By:
CALGARY - For the first time in 11 years, the University of Calgary Dinos defeated the University of Alberta Pandas, earning a 2-1 overtime victory Friday night at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton.

BOX SCORE

Scoring for the visitors was three-time Olympic gold medalist Hayley Wickenheiser, who also assisted on the game-winner by Elana Lovell with 12.4 seconds left to go in extra time.

Team captain Leah Copeland scored the lone goal for the Pandas in the loss, snapping a 12-game winning streak against their provincial rivals.

The last Calgary win also took place on October 29, back in 1999, when the Dinos earned a 2-1 victory on home ice.

This night, however, Canada West leading scorer Wickenheiser opened the scoring at the 6:05 mark of the second period when she put away her own rebound on a Calgary power-play for her seventh goal in seven games.

The middle frame was bookended by two strong periods by Alberta, outshooting the Dinos 19-4, but virtually unable to solve sophomore netminder Amanda Tapp.

The game's first star was no more incredible than early in the third period when she stoned Alberta's Karla Bourke on two point-blank opportunities in front of the Dino net with her lightning-quick left pad.

An athletic shoulder save on third-year Sarah Hilworth during an Alberta man-advantage late in third continued to keep the home team off the score sheet until Copeland fired a wristshot just inside the near post on a 3-on-2 with only 1:21 left.

The remainder of regulation and the 10-minute overtime then became mired with penalties, only to allow Tapp to stand her ground before Alberta's penalty killers Lindsie Fairfield and Sarah Grandinetti each determinedly blocked multiple shots in their own end before Wickenheiser found an open Lovell in scoring position to the right of the net to end the proceedings.

Calgary went 2-6 on the night on special teams, while Alberta went 0-9.

The 5-2-0 Dinos will host the 4-2-1 Pandas at 7:30 PM MT tomorrow at the Olympic Oval in Calgary for the rematch.
