CALGARY – Ashley Hill rained a barrage of threes on the Lethbridge Pronghorns, scoring 34 points to lead the Calgary Dinos to their first win of the season, 71-53 Friday night in the Jack Simpson Gym.
BOX SCORE
Hill connected on eight of her 12 three-point attempts, going 12-for-21 overall as the Dinos opened up an early lead and cruised to the 18-point win.
“Coaches love fifth-year players, because it takes a long time to figure this game out,” said Calgary head coach
Shawnee Harle. “(Ashley) is a fifth year that has some things figured out – and she played that way tonight.”
Calgary improves to 1-2, while Lethbridge falls to the same 1-2 mark.
While Hill handled the lion's share of the offence, the Dinos got a solid team effort on defence with 47 total rebounds and eight players hauling in at least three boards.
Megan Schaufele led the way with nine, including three offensively as Calgary's 21 off the O glass nearly matched the Horns' 23 defensive.
“We've been working really hard on our rebounding, that what you saw on the floor tonight is how we do it in practice,” said Harle. “That hard work has been paying off in games. If you can get teams to be one-and-done, it just makes things that much easier.”
The Dinos opened up a 22-13 lead after the opening quarter and were able to outscore the Horns every period thereafter. The second half was much tighter than the first, with Calgary only outscoring Lethbridge by a 34-30 margin after the break.
Hill's 34 easily led all players, although Becky Heninger had a solid night offensively for the Horns against her former team. Heninger put up 23 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field, while Lauren Taal was the only other Pronghorn to hit double digits with her 10.
Tilly Ettinger added eight points for Calgary, while
Alex Cole had six.
Megan Schaufele led all players with her nine rebounds on the night, while Ettinger added seven. Kenzie Sheen's seven boards led the way for Lethbridge.
The two teams will close out their weekend series Saturday night in The Jack, with tip-off slated for 6 p.m.
