CALGARY – Rolling along nicely having won four straight games, the University of Calgary Dinos now get set for another shot at their Edmontonian rivals, who twice dismissed them to open the season.
Drawing the defending Canada West champions first coming out of the gate to open up Canada West action, Calgary dropped 4-1 and 5-2 decisions to the Golden Bears, who have since only lost once. Calgary is currently mired in a ten game losing streak in Edmonton against the Bears, but has had better luck at Father David Bauer, where they've gone 2-2-1.
With a home-and-away series set for this weekend with Alberta, Calgary will have a chance both to bust their slump at Clare Drake Arena, as well as keep improving their home-ice advantage.
During their trip to Vancouver this past weekend to face the UBC Thunderbirds, the Dinos swept their west coast rivals, winning 3-2 on Friday before winning in a shootout on Saturday after letting a 1-0 lead slip away in the waning seconds of regulation. The Dinos have proven that they can scrape out victories when they have to, with two of their four victories coming via the shootout, and one coming in overtime. In a tough Canada West conference, this will to win will certainly come in handy down the stretch should they keep it up.
After another stellar weekend, fourth-year
Reid Jorgensen has six goals and two assists through six games, which is good for a tie for third place with Alberta forward Sean Ringrose. Jorgensen, who was last week's Canada West Athlete of the Week, is one goal away from matching his 2009-10 output, where he potted seven to go along with 23 assists.
Torrie Wheat,
Brock Nixon, and
Teegan Moore have been productively unselfish, combining for 13 assists and only one goal to open the season. Proven goal-scorers from their previous years with the Dinos, all three are capable of scoring on a whim, something Calgary would not pass up.
Rookie
Colton Grant, who scored the lone regulation goal against UBC this past weekend, has led the charge amongst the Dinos freshman, while
Eric Frere leads the defence.
Goaltenders
Dustin Butler and
Kris Lazaruk remain remarkably equal in terms of their play on the ice, with the third-year Butler slightly outdoing the rookie this past weekend with a 40 save, one goal-allowed performance. Lazaruk made 32 saves in Calgary's 3-2 victory over UBC.
Alberta has once again opened up the season on fire offensively, having scored 34 goals through six games. The Golden Bears finished the 2009-10 season with 145 total goals, 41 more than the next highest team.
Derek Ryan and Chad Klassen lead the Bears and the conference with 16 points each, a full eight points ahead of Ringrose and Jorgensen, who are tied for third place. Rookie Johnny Lazo has seven points as well for the Bears, whose depth is shown with six total skaters in the top-10 in points
Alberta has played three goaltenders during the opening stretch of the season, and Kurtis Mucha has found the best luck, going 3-0 with a 1.67 GAA.
Following the weekend series, Calgary will stay at home to host the Saskatchewan Huskies, while Alberta will enjoy a bye weekend.
