CALGARY – With their 3-1 victory over the third ranked Alberta Golden Bears, the Calgary Dinos made history on Sunday afternoon, going undefeated at home for the first time in the program's history.
BOX SCORE
The Dinos went 6-0-1 at the West Varsity Pitch in 2010, beating ranked teams such as Victoria, UBC, and most recently, Alberta along the way. At 7-3-2, the Dinos currently sit in a tie for second place, with several west coast games still ongoing. With one weekend remaining in their regular season schedule, the Dinos remain in a dog-fight for playoff positioning with three other teams, and must find positive results against Fraser Valley and Victoria to keep control of their postseason destiny.
While the 3-1 result over the Bears on Sunday looks like a convincing victory for Calgary on paper, it was hardly an easy battle for the home-squad. The Dinos received numerous breaks, especially in the opening half. Alberta was awarded seven corner kicks and consistently buzzed around the Dinos net, with Marcus Johnstone notably just barely missing wide on several shot attempts.
Christian Lorenzoni opened the scoring for the Dinos in the 43rd minute, the beneficiary of a rebound from Alberta keeper Jaswinder Gill.
Izak Lawrence's initial shot on goal was hard enough to bounce off of the fourth year netminder, which Lorenzoni took care of.
Just minutes into the second half,
Brett Howard got his third goal of the weekend on a confident shot into the left side of the net.
Izak Lawrence was credited with his second assist of the afternoon on the play, drawing in numerous Alberta defenders.
Dylan Tooby made it 3-0 against the number three team in the nation on a spectacular shot off of a cross from
Ilya Zelinskiy. Laying out for the bicycle kick, the fifth year senior made no mistake, potting it just past Gill for the Dinos' largest lead of the game.
The Bears would strike shortly thereafter, where Jonah Feil redirected an Ignacy Broda cross past a fooled Dinos goaltender, #J.P. Crescenzi#. Alberta would press hard from then-on, but simply could not solve the Dinos back-line.
Dinos Head Coach
Brian McDonnell was ecstatic with the play of his team.
“That's a massive victory,” said the first year head coach. “We are a great team when we can score goals, and we definitely did it today.”
“We worked hard all week in practice in putting our forwards in dangerous spots in front of the net,” continued McDonnell. “It really paid off for us.”
Next weekend, the Dinos will fly west to finish up their season, with key matches against Fraser Valley and Victoria, while Alberta will host Trinity Western and UBC in their regular season finales.
