Dinos, 'Birds hook up in Vancouver

| By:
CALGARY – Back on track after two extra-time victories this past weekend, the University of Calgary Dinos now prepare for a UBC Thunderbirds team that had recent success against the defending Canada West champions.

Despite losing hold of a 4-1 third period lead on Friday night in Lethbridge, forward Brock Nixon saved the day for the Dinos, scoring the lone shootout goal to beat the Pronghorns by a score of 5-4.

On Saturday night at their home-opener, it was the Dinos who had to fight back against the Pronghorns, using a third period Reid Jorgensen goal and an overtime marker from Jerrid Sauer to complete the 2-1 comeback at Father David Bauer.

The weekend sweep brings the Dinos back to .500 after a disappointing start to the season in Edmonton nearly three weeks ago, where they dropped two games to the Alberta Golden Bears.

With both Jorgensen and Sauer combining for seven goals already on the year alongside Teegan Moore who has four assists, the Dinos have gotten very solid offensive output during their 2-2 start to the season. Both Torrie Wheat and Brock Nixon each have two assists as well, and will be looking for their first goals.

Two Calgary goaltenders were credited with victories on the weekend, with both performing reasonably equally. Dustin Butler had 32 saves in the 5-4 Friday triumph, while Kris Lazaruk gave up only a goal while stopping 24 shots in Saturday's win.

Rounding out a four-game season-opening home stand at their newly renovated Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre, the Birds are looking to ride a recent come-from-behind victory against the Golden Bears to bigger and better things after a sub-par 2009 season, where they went 8-19-1.

The Birds followed up their gritty 4-2 victory on Friday against the Bears with a disappointing 6-1 loss on Saturday courtesy of two goals from the defending Canada West Player of the Year Chad Klassen.

Dalton Pajak has two goals and an assist through two games for the T-Birds, while Tyler Ruel and Matthew Schneider, two of the leading scorers from 2009, remain threats for UBC.

Calgary owns a 7-4-1 record over the Birds in the past three years, and is 2-2 specifically in Vancouver. As a team, Calgary has been very effective in their opening four games on the penalty kill, allowing only two power play goals on 25 short-handed situations, while UBC has yet to strike gold on the man-advantage, going 0 for 11 in their first two games.

Following the weekend series, Calgary will engage in a home-and-home series against the Golden Bears while UBC will hit the road for the first time this season, travelling to Regina to face the Cougars.
