Late goal lifts Dinos over 'Horns

| By:
LETHBRIDGE, Alta. – Entering the weekend the Lethbridge Pronghorns and Calgary Dinos had identical records and it looked like they would head into the back half of the home-and-home series with same records, but a goal in the final minute lifted the Dinos over the Horns 1-0.

BOX SCORE

Throughout the contest the Dinos held the majority of the possession, but the Horns defending was solid, turning way rush after rush. Jalessa Johnston was equal to any shots that did get through, making 7 saves through 89 minutes.

With plenty of ball possession in the opening 45 minutes, the Dinos directed 13 shots towards the Horns goal, but never truly threatened to open the scoring.

Just as it looked like the game would end scoreless, Calgary forward Tessa Miller's cross found the foot of an unmarked Sarah Benson, who stuck out a foot to redirect the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.

The Horns were not without their opportunities early on.  Midfielder Janelle Groten had the best chance of the opening half, her long range strike beating Dinos 'keeper Kristen Barton.  Her strike hit the crossbar, ricocheting off Barton and spinning off the line.

The Dinos' good possession continued into the second half, with a pair of near misses in the opening 20 minutes of the half. Miller put a header just wide of the post and Morena Ianniello's shot from the top of the box sailed over the bar.

Just prior to Benson's goal-scoring heroics, Johnston made a great sliding challenge on the Dino striker to keep the game scoreless.

With the win, the Dinos move to 2-4-1, while the Horns fall to 1-5-1. The back half of the home-and-home series goes tomorrow in Calgary.
