Bears top Dinos to open regular season

| By:

EDMONTON – The Dinos' 2010-11 Canada West season got off to a rocky start Friday night as they fell 5-2 to the Alberta Golden Bears at Clare Drake Arena.

BOX SCORE

A three-goal outburst by the Bears in the second period put the game out of reach for the Dinos, who fall to 0-1-0 to open the campaign.

Scoring a pair of goals, including the game-winner, Sean Ringrose led the Golden Bears. Defencemen Colin Joe and Jesse Craige also scored for Alberta, as did freshman forward Alex Rodgers.  Five Golden Bears finished with multiple-point nights, as Ringrose, Joe, Chad Klassen, Derek Ryan, and Johnny Lazo all picked two points in the win.

Dinos captain Reid Jorgenson scored for the visitors, as did Jerrid Sauer.

A member of last year's CIS All-Rookie Team, Ringrose, a former Medicine Hat Tiger, opened the scoring early in the first period when the initial shot by Alberta team captain Eric Hunter squeaked under Calgary goaltender Nathan Deobald and sat in front of the goal line for Ringrose to tap in for his first of the season.

Calgary evened the score only 54 seconds later when Tyler Swystun sent in 2010 Second Team Canada West All-Star Jorgensen on a partial breakaway, putting the puck home to the stick side of Golden Bears 'keeper Réal Cyr.

Rodgers, a rookie who last played in Prince George of the WHL, regained the lead for the home squad when Ryan, a 2010 Canada West First Team all-Star, took a wrist-shot from the slot, which crept under Deobald for Rodgers to direct home for the 2-1 lead.

The middle stanza tilted the ice in the Golden Bears' favour, as they notched several chances, with Ringrose earning his second tally of the night on the power-play when he rushed up the ice, cut through the face-off circle, and snapped a wrist shot off the crossbar at the 3:35 mark of the second period.

The Dinos attempted to sway the momentum back in favour of the visitors, but several shots directed towards the Alberta goal missed the target.

A 12-3 shot advantage for the Golden Bears resulted and, as the period wound down, the Alberta defensemen got in on the action with freshman Craige and Joe hitting the scoresheet.  Craige's goal managed to chase Deobald from the Dinos' net, as former Kelowna Rocket Kris Lazaruk took over.

Sauer finished off the scoring by tipping a point shot from rearguard Eric Frere.

Alberta outshot the Dinos 27-21 on the night and went 1-4 with the man advantage.  Calgary went 0-3.

The Dinos and Bears will do battle once more Saturday night, with face-off at 7:30 p.m.
