EDMONTON - While goaltender
Katie Urness was the story for two periods, the play of Tarin Podloski set the stage for a third-period explosion by the No. 3-ranked University of Alberta Pandas, completing a hat trick while handing the University of Calgary Dinos a 6-1 defeat Saturday night at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton.
BOX SCORE
In the second game of a home-and-home series, Alberta improved their seasonal record to 16-0 while 1-13 Calgary suffered their 13th straight loss, including four straight against the Pandas.
The Dinos got the lead early in the opening frame when a shot from the Alberta blue-line by junior rearguard
Casey Irving eluded Pandas netminder Dana Vinge, zipping in and out of the net for the 1-0 lead at the 3:45 mark of the first period.
Urness held the home team at bay with 25 saves through two periods, only allowing Podloski to claim her first goal of the night off an in-the-crease rebound of a Leah Copeland shot, tying the game at one.
Just 21 seconds into the final stanza, Calgary native Copeland took a pass from Podloski and put a wristshot high on Urness' glove side for the game-winner. Podloski would follow it up with a backhand through the five-hole on a partial breakaway as well as another quick rebound to put the Pandas up 4-1 by the 4:17 mark of the third.
Canada West's leading scorer, in points as well as goals, now has two hat tricks on the season and 16 goals in 16 games.
Rookie forward Katie Stewart and junior defender Andrea Boras added unassisted efforts to end the night for Urness, with freshman
Jennifer Mallard, stalwart in a 2-1 loss the night before in Calgary, closed out the game.
The Pandas head out on the road next weekend to face the UBC Thunderbirds while the Dinos will return home to host the Regina Cougars.
