Bears take another one on home ice

| By:
EDMONTON – A three-goal third period for the home side blew open a 3-3 tie as the No. 2 Alberta Golden Bears defeated the Calgary Dinos 6-3 Friday night at Clare Drake Arena in the front end of a home-and-home set.

BOX SCORE

Dale Mahovsky, formerly of the Kootenay Ice, led all players with three points on the night and scored the game-winner just 36 seconds after Calgary had brought the game to three goals apiece.

A hard slapshot from the blue-line by fellow Fort Saskatchewan native Mark Ashton got kicked out by netminder Dustin Butler straight to Mahovsky who was all alone on the right faceoff dot to bang home the rebound into the open net.

The junior forward scored his first goal of the game off a scramble late in the second to give Alberta a 3-1 lead.

Just under a minute later, former Kamloops Blazer Reid Jorgensen, who had two helpers on the night, fired a high shot towards Bears 'keeper Réal Cyr, catching him off guard and fell towards Calgary forward Aaron Richards) who took a couple of stabs at the puck before Torrie Wheat picked up the loose puck and cut the deficit to one goal.

The Cyr miscue countered a Butler error early in the opening frame when he went behind the net to corral a dump-in but accidentally played the puck in the wrong direction towards the slot where Chad Klassen accepted the generous gift and put his team-leading 12th goal of the season into the empty net for the 1-0 lead at the 1:45 mark of the first period.

After a Joel Eisenkirch backhand deke to knot the game at one, Klassen, Canada West's leading scorer (now with 30 points), completely undressed a Dino defender at the Calgary blue-line to create a 2-on-1 and dangled with the puck before sifting a perfect pass over to Brian Woolger  for a 2-1 lead.

Greg Gardner and Sean Ringrose  finished off the scoring for the home team while Matt Isbister scored the remaining single for the visitors.

The two teams will both head south for the conclusion of the home-and-home series with puck drop going at 7 p.m. MT Saturday night at Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.
