CALGARY – The Calgary Dinos' sister act of Shannon and
Erin Davidson both scored in the first period to lead the Dinos to a 3-1 victory over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns at the Olympic Oval Friday night.
BOX SCORE
Erin Davidson scored the first goal of the game at 12:50 in the first period from a setup by
Tanya Morgan and
Beccy Niehaus.
“It wasn't the prettiest goal,” she admitted after the victory. ”Beccy passed it out front and I whacked at it a couple of times and put it in.”
Shannon Davidson, Erin's sister, would solidify the Dinos lead with the eventual game winner four minutes later. That goal came shorthanded with
Calaine Inglis in the box for hooking.
Nicole Kuglin set up the goal with a clearing attempt out of the Dinos zone that took a funny bounce into the centre of the ice. Davidson picked up this bounce and carried it into a one-on-one with the Pronghorn defender in Lethbridge's end before ripping a wristshot past Lethbridge goalie Kailey McMaster.
Both of the Davidson's markers were their first CIS goals and Erin's was her first goal as a Dino in two seasons.
McMaster suffered a bad first period, allowing two goals on just five shots, but made up for it in the remainder of the game stopping 16 of 18 shots on the night.
At the other end,
Katie Urness fared far better stopping 26 of 27 shots on the evening, including a 13-save second period.
“Katie gave us a chance to win tonight. She made some awesome saves,” Dinos coach
Danielle Goyette commented after the game.
It wasn't until the third when Lethbridge would solve Urness. Amy VanBuskirk scored that marker on the power play at 2:42 with
Sally Merrick in the box for the Dinos. The Pronghorns crashed the net and in the ensuing scrum in front managed to shovel the puck over a sprawled Urness. Jenna-Marie Durnin and Brittney Kaye picked up assists on the Pronghorns' only conversion.
The Pronghorns would continue to lay on pressure throughout the third but were stymied by the Dinos defense which, in addition to only allowing one goal, managed to kill off six out of seven Lethbridge power plays.
Lethbridge's penalty kill was perfect on the night, ending all three Dinos advantages.
The Dinos final goal was scored on an open net with 1:18 left on the clock from the stick of
Elana Lovell, her sixth goal of the season, assisted by Cait O'Hara.
The Dinos and Pronghorns wrap up their weekend home-and-home series with a date down Highway 2 in Lethbridge, with face-off slated for 7 p.m. Saturday at Nicholas Sheran Arena.
