WINNIPEG - The Calgary Dinos fought gamely but couldn't hang on to a one-goal lead in the end, falling 2-1 to the Manitoba Bisons in a shootout Friday night.
BOX SCORE
Calgary extended its point streak to three games after sweeping Regina last weekend.
Nicole Kuglin put the Dinos up in the second period with her point shot on the power play that eluded Manitoba netminder Stacey Corfield. It was the only goal of the frame, despite the Bisons out-shooting the Dinos 11-5.
The sixth-ranked Bisons finally solved
Katie Urness at the 8:51 mark of the third period when Kayla Duna found the five-hole for an unassisted marker.
That goal would send the affair to overtime, where Manitoba outshot Calgary 4-1 but nothing was solved in the extra frame, sending the game to a shootout - Calgary's second in three games. None of the four Dinos shooters were able to beat Corfield, with
Elana Lovell,
Beccy Niehaus,
Casey Irving, and
Tanya Morgan all coming up short. Becca King and Tammy Brade both beat Urness to give the Bisons the victory.
Urness had another solid outing for the Dinos, earning first star honours by stopping 28 of the 29 shots sent her way.
The loss drops the Dinos to 3-13-1 on the year, while Manitoba improves to 13-4-0.
The series wraps up Saturday night at Max Bell Arena in Winnipeg, with face-off at 6 p.m. MT.
