CALGARY – Katie Urness made 18 saves and her team scored a goal in each period as the University of Calgary Dinos finished off a sweep of the Regina Cougars with a 3-0 shutout victory Saturday afternoon at Father David Bauer Arena.
BOX SCORE
The win follows a 3-2 shootout victory Friday night that snapped a 13-game losing skid for the Dinos.
Neither team gained an upper hand in the first period due to a large number of blocked or missed shots despite a back and forth offensive show. Fortunately for the Dinos, one of those few opportunities got through when
Elana Lovell managed to feed a pass out from behind the Cougars net to Cait O'Hara who snapped a one-time shot from the slot past Regina goalie Lisa Urban at 19:28.
The Cougars responded and came back strong in the second but couldn't solve Urness. The closest they got was 17 minutes into the second when, with Lovell in the penalty box on a tripping minor, the Cougars managed to feed a shot through the five-hole of Urness. The celebration was short lived as the referee immediately waved off the goal due to Cougar interference in the Dinos' crease.
Moments later, Calgary took control with its second goal of the night from the stick of
Sinead Tracey. Tracey buried the insurance goal at 17:58 in the second, beating Urban over the glove, with an assist from
Danielle Boyce.
The victory would be further solidified a minute into the third when
Beccy Niehaus scored the Dinos' third even strength goal of the night. That goal came after
Erin Davidson ripped a wrist-shot from the slot into Urban's pads. The resulting rebound bounced over the Regina goalie and was then tapped in by Niehaus.
Tanya Morgan also picked up an assist on the final goal of the game.
“Lately we've been working on playing as a team and not being individuals and being frustrated by doing everything ourselves,” Dinos captain O'Hara commented after the victory. “So we've really been focusing on the team aspect and it's paid off.”
On the goaltending front
Katie Urness posted her first CIS shutout with 18 saves while Urban turned away 17 of 20 shots fired her way. On the power play neither team found success with the Dinos failing to convert on six attempts while Regina was stopped eight times.
The Dinos (3-13-0) head out on the road to face the Manitoba Bisons next weekend, while Regina (5-6-5) enjoys a week off before a home-and-home series with the Saskatchewan Huskies Jan. 30-31.
