CALGARY – With a heartbreaking overtime loss in front of their home crowd against the Alberta Golden Bears now in the back of their minds, the University of Calgary Dinos will turn to the south in search of better results as they get set for another home-and-home series – this time with the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
Coming all the way back from a 3-0 first period deficit on Saturday night against the Bears to knot it up at three early in the third, the Dinos ran out of steam in the overtime period where they were outshot 10-0. The tenth shot was the one that counted for the Bears, as a Greg Gardner tap-in in traffic sealed the Calgary defeat.
The Dinos (9-6-3) received a spectacular performance from their goaltender
Dustin Butler, who despite giving up the three early goals – with two coming on the Alberta power play – turned it up when it mattered, making 21 saves in last 24 minutes en route to a 36-save performance.
Captain
Aaron Richards and
Teegan Moore each added goals for the Dinos, while
Ryan Gillen – formerly of the Calgary Hitmen – got his first marker of the season on the game's tying goal.
With three assists on the weekend, Calgary forward
Reid Jorgensen moved to ninth in Canada West in scoring with 19 points – 16 of those being by way of the helper. Jorgensen rides a seven-game point streak into the Lethbridge series. First year Dinos
Matt Isbister and
Blake Clement contributed in the scoring department as well, with Isbister notching a goal in a Friday loss and Clement adding an assist in each game.
With the Lethbridge Pronghorns (5-11-2), the Dinos will play a team that in fact helped them this past weekend, as the 'Horns beat the second place Manitoba Bisons by a score of 6-4 in regulation on Saturday evening. The Bisons loss, coupled with the valuable Saturday overtime point gained by the Dinos, kept Calgary only one point off the Winnipeg-based squad in third.
The Pronghorns got two goals each from rookie Adam Chorneyko and Ryan Pottruff in a four goal outburst over the second and third periods to wipe away an early 3-2 Bisons advantage. Chorneyko brought his total up to 14 points on the season with the goals, bringing him closer to the conference top 20.
Lethbridge continues to rely on forwards Dustin Moore and Andrew Courtenay for points, as they sport 22 and 18 points respectively, good for sixth and tenth in Canada West.
'Horns goalie Scott Bowles has played all but 40 minutes for his squad through 18 games, leading the conference in minutes played, shots against, and goals against. The third year goaltender will continue to be relied upon heavily and will be looking to improve on his 5-11-2 record this weekend.
Calgary owns a 2-0-1 record against the 'Horns in 2009-10, with an early regular season split in which both teams won a game in the shootout period preceding a 5-2 Calgary exhibition win over the holiday season at the SAIT tournament.
Kyle Annesley had four points for the Dinos in the October home-and-home series, while Andrew Courtenay had four goals for the Pronghorns.
The first game of the series goes in Lethbridge at the Nicholas Sheran Arena on Friday night before both teams head to Calgary for the rematch on Saturday. The second game of the series goes at 7 p.m. at the Father David Bauer Arena.
