Bears perfect in southern sweep

| By:
CALGARY - The Alberta Golden Bears won their second game in a row by a score of 1-0, downing the University of Calgary Dinos on the West Varsity Pitch in Calgary on Sunday.

BOX SCORE

After dispatching the Lethbridge Pronghorns by a 1-0 score with an early goal from Kevin Perry, the Bears waited until the 83rd minute on Sunday to find the back of the net. On a late corner kick for Alberta, it was Andrew Hood who came up with the ball after a scramble in front of the crowded Calgary net, and made no mistake in putting the ball past Dinos goaltender #J.P. Crescenzi#. Hood was a late game substitute for the Bears, and made Alberta head coach Len Vickery look very smart with the goal.

The Dinos came up with three very good opportunities shortly thereafter, as Joe Long bounced two shots off of Alberta goaltender Jaswinder Gill before David Bird's quick shot was gobbled up by the third year 'keeper. Gill was sensational on the afternoon, saving all of Calgary's 14 shots on goal in the shutout.

It was once again a story of being unable to connect on chances for Calgary, as they could not make good on any of their shots on goal. Long and Brian Delaney led the way with three shots each while three other Dinos had two. The Dinos have only four goals in six games, but have still collected seven key points in the conference standings.

J.P. Crescenzi takes the loss despite another solid afternoon, collecting nine saves. The fourth year goaltender remains confident in his club despite their struggles finding the back of the net.

“We came in pretty confident after our recent success, and I thought for the most part we took it to them the entire match,” said Crescenzi. “We generated lots of chances in their end, but we just need to capitalize on them more.”

“They were able to finish today despite us not giving them very much, and credit to them; they're a tough club to play. But we think its just a matter of time until more bounces start going our way, which will help us finish games better,” explained the veteran goalkeeper.

In taking care of both of their provincial rivals this weekend, Alberta improves to a Canada West best 4-0-2 with the victory. Alberta will stay on the road next weekend as they head west to face the Fraser Valley Cascades and the Victoria Vikes.

Calgary falls to 2-3-1 on the season after splitting its weekend series with the Bears and the Saskatchewan Huskies. They will invite the Lethbridge Pronghorns to the West Varsity Pitch next Saturday for the first game of a home and home series.
