ABBOTSFORD, B.C. - The University of the Fraser Valley women's soccer team, which recorded just three victories and three draws in 14 games during the 2008-2009 season, took a huge step toward respectability in the Canada West women's soccer league over the weekend after pulling off a sweep of Alberta teams on its home turf.
BOX SCORE
The Cascades came up with one of their best efforts since joining Canada West four years ago when they shutout the University of Calgary Dinos 4-0 Sunday at Bateman Park in Abbotsford.
The victory came on the heels of a 3-0 shutout of Lethbridge Saturday in Abbotsford.
The Cascades scored twice against the Pronghorns in the opening half, and popped in a pair against Calgary as well. It was a dominant half for the Cascades, who outshot the Dinos 6-2.
Ellen Kuyer (3rd year, Surrey, BC) opened the scoring in the 12th minute off a feed from Danica Snook.
Kristen Vanderpauw (5th year, Maple Ridge, BC) made it 2-0 with just seconds remaining in the first half when her long shot from the right side eluded Calgary keeper
Kristen Barton. For Vanderpauw, who led the Cascades in scoring last season with seven goals, it was her second tally in as many days.
Kuyer made it 3-0 in the 54th minute when she took a Kristen Vanderpauw pass and beat Barton. For Kuyer, it was her fourth goal in three games this season.
Megan Webster (3rd year, Abbotsford, BC) made it a 4-0 game in the 71st minute with a free kick which bounced off Calgary defenders and made it over the outstretched arms of the Dinos keeper.
Fraser Valley keeper Chantelle Biagioni (2nd year, Pitt Meadows, BC) finished the game stopping all three shots sent her way for her second shutout in three games this season.
“I was really happy with our effort today. It was vastly improved from what I saw Saturday in the shutout of Lethbridge,” stated Cascades head coach Colin Miller. “We are getting offence from such veterans as Ellen Kuyer and Kristen Vanderpauw, and Chantelle Biagioni has stopped everything the opponent has tested her with.”
The Cascades improved to 2-1 with the victory, while Calgary falls to 1-3.
The Dinos return to action Sept. 26 with a home game Saskatchewan.
The Cascades are home to Regina Sept. 26.
