VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds (2-0-0) broke out of a halftime deadlock with three second-half goals to give them the 3-0 win over the Calgary Dinos (0-2-0) on Sunday afternoon at Wright Field.
After a tough first half in which the feisty Dinos defence kept the UBC offence quiet, Abigail Raye finally got the T-Birds on the board in the 45th minute. The first year defender managed to bang the ball home through a scrum in front of the Calgary goal after the Dinos had failed to clear their defensive zone. That first tally seemed to spark the T-Bird attack, as they kept plenty of pressure on the Dinos defence for the rest of the match, resulting in two more goals from Kristyn Harrington and Elise Milosevich.
“We are still not where we should be but I thought we took a little step forward today,” said UBC head coach Hash Kanjee. “I think we had a bit of first week apprehension, but I think today I saw us just relax and get on with the job.”
The 'Birds also beat the Dinos 3-0 on Saturday to kick off their season, but Kanjee wasn't impressed with the amount of turnovers and missed opportunities he saw from his squad in their first game.
“I thought we deserved the 3-0 result this time,” said Kanjee. “There were a couple chances in the first half that we should have put away, but we will be happy with the three goals given the fact that we played better today than yesterday. We had less turnovers and we were more proactive in our attack, which paid dividends.”
Harrington was the second T-Bird to light the lamp on Sunday, as she got the final touch on a shot from the edge of the circle off a UBC penalty corner in the 56th minute. Milosevich then capped things off for the 'Birds when she finished an excellent passing play in the 61st minute, collecting the ball with her back to the goal just in front of Dinos goalie
Stephanie Petrowitsch before turning and firing to extend the UBC lead to three.
Dina Bulfone got her second straight shutout win to begin her CIS career, while Petrowitsch gets the loss for Calgary.
The T-Birds will remain at home next weekend to take on defending CIS champions Victoria, while Calgary will be hosting the Alberta Pandas. UBC and Victoria square off on September 26 and 27 at Wright Field. Both games start at 1:00 p.m.
