Dinos drop weekend closer at UBC

| By:
VANCOUVER - Greg Smith did his best to squash any doubt about his teams' ability to find the net by registering an early marker that stood up as the winner in UBC's 1-0 victory over the Calgary Dinos at Thunderbird Park.

BOX SCORE

Six minutes in, a give-and-go between midfielders Jorge Angel-Mira and Tyson Keam created room for the latter to streak down the left wing before sending a deep cross to Smith at the far post. The first-year midfielder then made no mistake in heading the ball into the open net.

The lone goal was all that resulted from a first half that saw the T-Birds control the majority of the play.

"We had them on the ropes and I was telling the guys to push for another", said UBC head coach Mike Mosher.

In the 33rd minute Keam continued his strong play from Friday's match and nearly got the home side up two goals on a free kick sending a rocket towards the goal forcing Calgary keeper #J.P. Crescenzi# into a good save.

Five minutes later another give-and-go, this time with Ryan Reynolds, resulted in a cross from the second-year striker that again found Smith alone at the far post but the rookie was denied his second thanks to a save from a well-positioned Crescenzi.

The match was chippy in the early going with the referee showing three yellow cards in the first 30 minutes.

The Dinos' chances were few in the first half but they came out of the break re-energized and carried the majority of the play to start the second half. First-year forward David Benavides had two opportunities to equalize with the first coming in the 53rd minute following a run down the left side that went wide before being robbed by UBC keeper Nikolai Matni just over a minute later when a smart cross sent Benavides in alone.

Defence then took over as neither team could muster any quality scoring chances until the 75th minute when a header by Scott McCorkill was stopped by Matni to keep the visitors off the scoreboard en route to his first clean sheet of the season.

The win levels the Thunderbirds record at 2-2-0 and gives them as they the full six points from their home opening weekend.

"We needed the six points not only for the standing but for our confidence as well", added Mosher.

The loss drops the Dinos to 1-2-1 on the year.

The Thunderbirds face provincial rivals #4 Victoria and #3 Trinity Western on the road next week in what promises to be a critical series for the team. Calgary returns home to host Saskatchewan and Alberta.
