Vikes shut out Dinos in season opener

VICTORIA - Rookie midfielder Matthew McNaughton's 90th minute goal capped off an impressive outing for the UVic Vikes men's soccer team as they defeated the Calgary Dinos 2-0 in their home opener.

Holding onto a 1-0 lead, the Vikes withstood Calgary's attack in the second half and picked up an insurance marker in the waning minutes. Vikes debutant McNaughton slipped past Calgary 'keeper #J.P. Crescenzi# to close out the game with the victory. 
 
The Vikes got off to a strong start as Jordie Oberg redirected Daniel LePage's shot to put the Vikes up 1-0 as the first half drew to a close.
 
The visitors out-shot the Vikes 18-12 but Canada West All Star 'keeper Dan Kilpatrick was dominant between the pipes to pick up the shutout.
 
"Calgary came in tough and they were better than I expected," Canada West coach of the year Bruce Wilson said of the important victory. "But full credit to Dan (Kilpatrick), he kept them off the scoresheet and he has been phenomenal in net for us so far."
 
The Vikes host the Lethbridge Pronghorns Sunday Centennial Stadium with a 2:15pm kick-off, while Calgary heads to Abbotsford to take on the UFV Cascades.
