Hoop Dinos get big road sweep in Winnipeg

| By:
WINNIPEG – In the final game of their two game weekend series at the Investors Group Athletic Centre, the University of Calgary Dinos beat the University of Manitoba women's basketball team 89-81 Saturday night.

BOX SCORE

The Dinos came out firing to start the game, hitting three 3-pointers and finishing the quarter shooting 56 percent. Ashley Hill, who was the game-high scorer the previous night, had two of those 3-pointers and eight points. She finished the game tied with teammate Robyn Gibson with 19 points, the game high.

Midway through the opening quarter Manitoba was down by 10 and struggling to make their shots; they got a boost from second-year guard Whitney Lodge-Zaparnick, who had five points coming off the bench.

The Bisons' shooting woes continued in the second quarter. They hit only six of their 21 shots and finished the half with a dismal 28 percent from the field. The Dinos continued to make their shots and went into the half-time break shooting 46 percent from the field.

With their shots not dropping, the Herd started taking the ball to the net in the third. They were rewarded with free throws, in which they hit six of eight. It wasn't enough to slow the Dinos down though. Calgary's shooting simmered down in the second half but was 12 of 13 from the free throw line and continued to widen the gap between the two teams.

Down by 19 heading into the final quarter, Manitoba couldn't seem to catch up to the Dinos. In the last minute the Herd made a late charge capped off with a three by fifth year guard Michele Hynes and a bucket and one by Lodge-Zaparnick. It was too little too late for the Bisons though as first year guard Tamara Jarret silenced any hope of a comeback by hitting two free throws to end the game.

Lodge-Zaparnick led the Bisons with 17 points. Michele Hynes added eight assists to her 12 points. Manitoba was out-rebounded 49 to 37 in the game.

The Bisons host the Winnipeg Wesmen next Saturday, while the Dinos (3-1) return home to face the Fraser Valley Cascades and Thompson Rivers WolfPack next weekend in the Jack Simpson Gym.
