CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos overcame a two-goal deficit in the third period while
Torrie Wheat and
Kyle Annesley scored shootout goals to squeak past the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 4-3 at Father David Bauer Arena Friday.
BOX SCORE
Trailing 3-1 heading into the third period, the Dinos got goals from
Teegan Moore and
Dustin Hatlelid 94 seconds apart early in the final stanza to tie it up. Overtime solved nothing, and while Annesley and Wheat were able to get goals past Saskatchewan netminder Jeff Harvey,
Dustin Butler was equal to the task in goal for Calgary in stopping both Steven Gillen and former Calgary Hitman Kyle Bortis to preserve the win.
The Dinos were staring at an early deficit in the first when Butler bobbled an attempt to play the puck behind his net on the penalty kill. Andrew Bailey took this opportunity to poke check the bouncing puck into the net, putting the Huskies up 1-0.
Calgary would answer 35 seconds later when Wheat netted his sixth goal of the season. Reid Jorgenson started the play with a shot that ricocheted off Harvey before Wheat buried the rebound, with
Brock Nixon picked up the other assist on the play.
After that intense bout of offensive prowess the pace cooled a little for the next 30 minutes. Saskatchewan capitalized more readily than the Dinos in this time, beating Butler twice more. Shaun Vey netted the second Saskatchewan goal with a pass across the slot at 12:20 in the first set up by Gillen, while Brennan Bosch grabbed the third Huskies tally with a recovered rebound set up by Michael Kaye and Kyle Ross at 13:06 in the second.
Down by two goals going into the third the Dinos began to pick up the momentum and were rewarded when Moore converted on his second goal of the season from
Jerrid Sauer and
Blake Clement at 5:40 in the third.
Moments later Wheat, the game's first star, was awarded a penalty shot after he was hauled down by he visor on a breakaway. Wheat would try to beat Harvey five-hole only to be turned away.
Despite that setback, the Dinos continued to push and found their lucky break, and the tying goal, at 7:14. A rebound bounced off Harvey and onto the stick of an awaiting
Dustin Hatlelid, and
Paul Gentile and
Matt Isbister picked up assists on the goal.
The Huskies had two chances with the power play late, including the last 1:06 of overtime, but the score remained tied as they game headed to the shootout – the Dinos' fifth in their first nine games of the season.
In the shootout Butler turned into a wall, turning away Gillen and Bortis while the Dinos found the back of the twine off the sticks of Annesley and Wheat.
When the dust settled the Dinos had out shot the Huskies 36-30 after going 0-2 on the power play. The Huskies had the only power play goal of the game on four attempts.
With this game in the books these prairie rivals will rest up for the next tilt Saturday, with face-off at 7 p.m. MT at Father David Bauer Arena.
