Huskies sweep Dinos

| By:
SASKATOON - The No. 4 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies earned an 83-62 win over the University of Calgary Dinos on the strength of 31 third quarter points Saturday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.

With the win the Huskies sweep the weekend series and move back to a winning 4-2 record. The Dinos drop to 6-2 after the weekend trip. A night earlier, the Huskies won 97-80.

After a poor first half, the Huskies turned the game around in the second half outscoring Calgary 55-27. The Huskies were shooting just 27.5% in the first half making just 11 of 40 field goals. They scored just four points in the second quarter.

Calgary, who was shooting at 60% at one point in the first half and finished at 48.3%, finished the game at 36.1%.

“This was a really good weekend for us,” said Huskie head coach Lisa Thomaidis. “I'm really proud of how hard we competed in the second half to come back from only scoring four points in second. Kim Tulloch played great individual defence and our ability to get ball inside to Jana Spindler was difference in the second half.”

Calgary was able to keep the game much tighter throughout the first quarter than a night earlier when the Huskies found themselves with a 15 point lead in the game. The Dinos led twice in the first quarter but weren't able to hold on to a lead at the end of the first allowing Lindsay DeGroot to have a three point play on a late foul and free throw. The Huskies led 24-22 at the end of the first quarter.

Megan Schaufele tied the game up at 24 to start the second quarter. Ashley Hill quickly added another two for the Dinos. They continued to have a strong second quarter and led 35-28 heading into halftime.

The Huskies pulled back within four points to start the second half. Spindler brought it within two with two foul shots. She added a layup just seconds later to tie the game at 38. The Huskies took over the lead at 42-38. Keeping the lead going the Huskies had a six point lead heading into the final frame at 59-53.

The Huskies continued the comeback throughout the fourth quarter.  The Huskies went on a 12-point run leading at 71-55. Calgary didn't score another point until a 4:43 left and by then the Huskies lead was too large to overcome.

DeGroot scored a game high 26 points for the Huskies and had a game high 12 rebounds. Spindler followed with 19 and Tulloch had 12. Alex Cole was the best for the Dinos scoring 17 points, while Schaufele had 15.

As a team the Huskies were on top on the boards nabbing 55 rebounds to Calgary's 34. The Huskies had 19 points on their second chance.

The Huskies will hit the road to Edmonton to face the University of Alberta Pandas, while the Dinos will travel to B.C. to face the Trinity Western University Spartans and the Simon Fraser University Clan next weekend. Both weekend sets will be the last for the Huskies and Dinos before the Canada West holiday break.
