CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women's basketball team erupted for 115 total points on Saturday night, defeating the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack by a score of 115-84.
BOX SCORE
It marked the first time since Feb. 10, 1990 that the Dinos women's basketball team has put up 115 points in a game, where the Dinosaurs destroyed the Saskatchewan Huskies by a score of 118-34. That victory was the 60th in a row for Calgary during a record 69-game winning streak for the women's squad.
Jumping out to a quick 13-0 lead, and holding the Wolfpack without a field goal for nearly six minutes to start the game on Saturday night, the Dinos had the look of a team that seemed to be in an offensive rhythm from the get-go, scoring 32 points in the first quarter alone while holding TRU to 12.
Which they were, as the Dinos shot at a blistering 62% clip from the floor in the first quarter, and matched that pace in the last two quarters, shooting at a 61% rate. The only downfall on the spectacular offensive night was a tough second quarter, where they scored only 18 points to TRU's 29.
Calgary received remarkably balanced scoring in the game, with the game high being 20 from Robyn Gibson. The second year guard went six for seven from the floor, and added six foul shots to beef up her total.
The Dinos got double digit efforts from six more players, with 19 from Ashley Hill, 17 points and six rebounds from Alex Cole, and a solid 14 point and nine rebound effort from rookie Kaitie Beard standing out in the packed crowd.
The WolfPack, despite going down big in the first quarter, showed their resilience in fighting back in the second quarter, pulling to within nine by the halftime break. The Kamloops-based school managed their 84 points despite struggling from the floor for the majority of the game, shooting only 39% from the floor and going 17 for 25 from the charity stripe.
Jen Ju led the way for the 2-2 club, banking 22 points on the evening. Ju got help from Lindsay Dekoff, who marked 14 points and nine rebounds, and Tracy Kocs, who had 15 and six herself.
Dinos head coach Shawnee Harle liked the all-around effort her Dinos showed on Saturday.
“I told the girls in the team room after the game that I thought it was a really great team effort tonight,” said Coach Harle. “We had seven girls in double figures, which is really nice to see for such a young club.”
“I have to give credit to TRU though; it's a huge disadvantage to have to travel in between games on a road-weekend, where you get virtually no prep time,” continued Harle. “They showed no quit tonight.”
Sporting a 2-2 record after a weekend sweep at the hands of the Dinos and the Lethbridge Pronghorns, Thompson Rivers will head back home to host the UBC Thunderbirds next weekend, the 20th and the 21st of November.
The Dinos improve to 5-1 with the victory, and remain tied for first place with the Alberta Pandas in the Prairie division as the weekend comes to a close. The Dinos go on the road next weekend for a tough road test against the #2 ranked Saskatchewan Huskies.
