Despite win, Dinos knocked out

| By:
WINNIPEG - The University of Calgary Dinos earned a 2-1 road win Saturday morning at University Stadium in Winnipeg over the Manitoba Bisons, but it wasn't enough as the Alberta Pandas officially eliminated the Dinos from playoff contention with their 2-1 win over the Saskatchewan Huskies.

BOX SCORE

A late goal in the second half by Jasmine Maser was enough to seal the game for the Dinos, who now move to 6-7-0 this conference season, while the Bisons record falls to 6-6-1. The Bisons were able to apply pressure on the Dinos throughout the game, but none of the partial breaks or corner kicks resulted in many quality scoring chances.

Bisons head coach Walt McKee says the loss is tough to take. “We're disappointed by this result. We expected to pick up a win today, and we'll finish up the season strong tomorrow against Lethbridge and see what happens in terms of the playoffs.”

The Bisons tried to tie the game early in the second half with chances coming from Carrie Nash, Jaime Lacoste, and Desiree Scott, but it wasn't until the 71st minute when Stephanie Rurak put one past Calgary keeper Kristen Barton to tie the game at one. The tie was short lived however, as six minutes later, Calgary's Maser put her team ahead by knocking in a rebound off of Tessa Miller's free kick just outside the box.

In the first half the Bisons applied early pressure but weren't able to create much for scoring opportunities. Calgary picked up the only goal of the half off of a free kick by fourth-year player Morena Ianniello that seemed to catch Bison keeper Laura Harrison by surprise. Later in the half, Caley Miskimmin had a partial break down the right side of the field, and was able to chip the ball back in front of the net, but no Bison player was around to knock it in. The first half ended with Calgary holding a slim 1-0 lead.

The Dinos close out their season Sunday afternoon as they pay the Regina Cougars a visit.
