Dinos dispose of the Pronghorns

| By:
CALGARY - On a chilly afternoon in the Foothills, Morena Ianniello had no problem heating up, leading her University of Calgary Dinos to a 4-2 victory over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns.

BOX SCORE

Ianniello, a fourth year forward for the Dinos, helped her team recover from a slow start, making good on the game winner and an insurance marker in the second half. With the two goals, Ianniello brings her season total to seven points, which leads the Dinos and puts her into the top 10 in Canada West in points.

The game certainly started out with Lethbridge providing the bulk of the pressure, as a strong offensive push resulted in two shots on goal and a fantastic goal from Sherry Latrace in the 14th minute off of a corner kick from Andrea Nippard.

With the early Pronghorn marker serving as a good wake up call for the Dinos, Calgary then evened the pressure and got a nice goal over the outstretched hands of Lethbridge goaltender Ashley Cowan from first year midfielder Jasmine Maser.

After a goal right out of the gate in the second half from Katie Blundell, both teams had an offensive burst, combining for three goals in a five minute stretch midway through the frame. Blundell followed up her strong performance last weekend with another on Saturday, adding an assist to go along with the goal.

Lethbridge responded to Ianniello's first goal, and the Dinos' third, with another beautiful corner kick play in the 73nd minute, where Jaclyn Green headed a cross from Andrea Nippard past Dinos goaltender Kristen Barton to bring them within one. Two minutes later however, Ianniello's second goal iced the game for Calgary.

Both goalkeepers looked shaky on Saturday, each making only two saves. However the offensive push was better for Barton of the Dinos, who was rewarded with the win, while Cowan and the Pronghorns are credited with the loss.

Calgary improves to 3-4-0 on the season, and can potentially climb into fifth place with a win on Sunday, combined with a Fraser Valley loss or tie. Lethbridge, however, failed in their seventh attempt on the year for their first victory, and sit at 0-7-0. Both teams head south to Lethbridge to face off in the second game of the home and home series on Sunday, where kick off goes at noon MDT.
