CALGARY - Despite 15 fouls and a sluggish mid game effort from the University of Calgary Dinos, an early goal from forward
Jeremy Jenkyns was enough in a 2-0 victory over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns.
BOX SCORE
Following a hard shot from Dinos defender
Matt Reid, Jenkyns capitalized on the juicy rebound off of Lethbridge goaltender Jordan Campbell, putting an easy one into the middle of the net. It was Jenkyns first goal on the season, and a welcome one for the offense deprived Dinos.
Calgary (3-3-1) then went 75 minutes before finding an insurance marker, which came off of
Devin Delany's head. Redirecting a well-placed corner kick from
David Bird in the 84th minute, Delany found his first goal of the season, which also helped the Dinos find their first single game two goal performance of the season.
In between goals, it was a chippy affair, which included three yellow cards and 24 combined fouls. Calgary's captain
Joe Long uncharacteristically took two yellow cards for arguing calls in a span of two minutes, leading to a red card for the defender, leaving his team a man-down for the final ten minutes. Long will also sit out the Dinos' next game as a result of the card, which goes in Lethbridge tomorrow.
While happy to record a victory in the standings, Dinos head coach Ken Price knows his team can play better.
“Well, it's always nice to get the three points in the standings, and you can't argue with victories, but we just didn't play very well today,” said the first year head coach. “We came out sluggish in the second half, and let them control the play for the majority of the half. Of course it doesn't help to be a man-down for any portion of the game, but we were able to get that second goal, which was nice.
“We have lots to work on,” continued Price. “They have some dangerous weapons, especially that long throw-in of theirs, which they were able to get lots of opportunities with. We need to limit those opportunities, and go get the victory tomorrow as well.”
Lethbridge (0-6-1) could not snap their own offensive struggles on Saturday, once again going without a goal, leaving their season total at three. Goaltender Jordan Campbell put in a nice performance for the 'Horns, making five saves in front of solid Dinos pressure.
Dinos goaltender #J.P. Crescenzi# also made five saves, and is credited with the shutout victory.
Both teams will now hit the road and head back to Lethbridge, where they complete the weekend series tomorrow. Kick-off follows the women's game at 2:15.
