Offence lights it up against 'Birds

VANCOUVER – The third-ranked Calgary Dinos put on another spectacular offensive performance Saturday, amassing 378 yards on the ground en route to a 50-26 victory over UBC at Thunderbird Stadium.

BOX SCORE

The win vaults Dinos back into sole possession of first place in Canada West with a 4-1 record, while UBC falls to 1-4.

The Dinos dominated the rushing game both offensively and defensively, out-gaining UBC 378-39 on the ground. Canada West rushing leader Matt Walter picked up 189 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries, and quarterback Erik Glavic had 98 yards and one score on the ground to go along with a 14-for-19 passing performance that netted him 217 yards and two touchdowns.

Walter is now averaging a league-best 163 yards rushing per contest, 60 more than his next closest rival, while Glavic still leads the league in total offence with 302.6 yards per game.

"Our ability to run the football is becoming the hallmark of our 2009 season," said Dinos head coach Blake Nill. "UBC did a great job stopping some of our run plays, but we were able to adjust and move the football, and that becomes something very difficult to defend."

The T-Birds were down just 14-7 with three minutes to go before halftime, but a couple of late second-quarter field goals and a big second half surge by the Dinos left UBC well behind.

Billy Greene had his best game behind centre as a T-Bird, throwing for 311 yards and three touchdowns on 26-for-41 passing, but running back Dave Boyd was held to just 38 yards on 10 carries.

Safety Alex Babalos was all over the field for the T-Birds, racking up a season 13.5 tackles and half a sack to lead the UBC defence. The second-year from Delta now ranks first in the league with 37.5 tackles and tops the league with an average of 7.5 tackles per game.

Glavic hooked up with receiver Anthony Parker on a 7-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring on Calgary's second drive of the game. Glavic threw a jump-ball in the back corner of the end zone and Parker managed to beat double-coverage to pull it down for the score.

Walter extended the lead to 14 early in the second with a 4-yard touchdown run after carrying for 39 of Calgary's 48 yards on the drive.

The T-Birds' first attempt to get on the board failed, as Billy Pavlopoulos' 33-yard field goal attempt sailed wide, but a fumble on the first play of the ensuing Calgary drive was recovered by Devin Kavanagh at the Dinos' 21 yard-line. A pass interference call in the end zone set UBC up with first and goal at the one, Boyd dove over the top of the line for the touchdown.

Field goals of 32 and 45 yards by Aaron Ifield extended the Dinos lead to 20-7 by halftime, and a 46 yard over-the-shoulder touchdown grab by Taylor Altilio on Calgary's second play of the third quarter further padded the lead.

Another field goal and a 25-yard touchdown run by Glavic gave the Dinos a commanding 37-7 lead, before the T-Birds started to show some life late in the third quarter. After a 14-yard touchdown toss from Greene to Jordan Grieve with just over two minutes left in the third, another Dinos fumble set up a 12-yard touchdown grab by Spencer Betts to make the score 37-20.

The T-Birds' offence came in bunches all day, but any hopes of a comeback were quickly dashed when Parker picked up his second touchdown of the contest, this time with a five yard run, on Calgary's next possession.

"One of the things I keep saying is that we need to learn how to play as a front-runner," said Nill. "We're slowly starting to learn that, and I was impressed with our effort for the most part, but there are still things we can improve."

Greene hooked up with Mark McVeigh for a 20-yard score with just under five minutes remaining in the game, and Ifield tacked on two late field goals to make the final 50-26.

With a solid performance, Ifield moved into 11th in all-time conference scoring (229) and a tie for eighth in field goals made (48) with Regina's Perri Scarcelli.

The Dinos return home to face the 2-2 Manitoba Bisons next Saturday, Oct. 10, their last game before the bye week.

"Manitoba is a very physical football team, and you need to remember they're just a year removed from winning a national championship," said Nill. "We're going to prepare this week for Manitoba with all the respect they deserve, especially after their big win today."

Kickoff goes at 1 p.m. MT at McMahon Stadium.
