Blundell scores two as Dinos top Cascades

| By:
CALGARY - Heading in two goals, Katie Blundell and the University of Calgary Dinos defeated the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades by a score of 2-0 on a rare Monday match.

BOX SCORE

Blundell scored both of her goals in the second half for the Dinos, which came off two impressive crosses from forwards Morena Ianniello and Tessa Miller.

“It was awesome today,” said Blundell, a fourth year forward for the Dinos. “Too often we play down from our ability, but we know we're a really good team, and today we proved it by playing 100%.”

Both teams came out of the gate fairly evenly, with the Dinos putting four shots on goal – two coming from midfielder Lindsay Burrowes – and the Cascades responding with two.

In the 53rd minute after the halftime break, the Dinos finally broke the game open with a fantastic offensive sequence. With the Cascades hustling back on defence, Burrowes found a streaking Morena Ianniello coming up the right hand side of the pitch. Ianniello then launched a perfectly placed cross in front of the goal, where Blundell had a wide open net in front of her to put the header.

The Cascades had their best chances late in second half, where Emma Broadfoot and Ellen Kuyer both beat Calgary goaltender Kristen Barton, but could not beat the crossbar and post respectively.

Blundell added the late insurance marker in the 90th minute, heading in Miller's cross from the left side of the field.

Cascades goaltender Chantelle Biagioni made four saves on six shots and is credited with the loss. Fraser Valley will end their season at home with two tough matches against UBC and Trinity Western.

Kristen Barton made three saves in the victory for the Dinos, and takes home the shutout for her efforts. Calgary, who has a mathematical chance at the postseason, sitting five points back of the fourth place Alberta Pandas, will finish up their season next weekend on the road against the Regina Cougars and the Manitoba Bisons.
