CALGARY – Relocated to McMahon Stadium, the home of both the Calgary Stampeders and University of Calgary Dinos football team, due to unplayable conditions at the West Varsity Pitch, the Dinos soccer team came out flat and could not recover on Sunday, as the University of Victoria Vikes took the 2-0 decision.
With the West Varsity Pitch unplayable due an unexpected snow storm on Saturday morning, both the women's and men's Saturday matches versus the University of Fraser Valley Cascades were postponed to Monday, and left the Sunday matches looking for a place to be played. With the Stampeders off on Sunday, McMahon Stadium sat unused and already shoveled, presenting an ideal venue to be used just across the street from the University of Calgary.
Lindsay Hoetzel scored the game winning goal just nine minutes into the contest on the first Vikes shot of the game, while Kendra Flock added an insurance marker in the 25th minute to pad her conference leading tally of goals, which now stands at 12. The two quick goals by the Vikes put the Dinos in a significant hole to start the match, from which they would never recover.
Lindsay Burrowes and Annie Hayes were both particularly active for the Dinos in their attempt to battle back, and
Katie Blundell also made her best effort, firing two shots in the substitute role.
Letting in two goals on the first three shots, Dinos netminder
Kristen Barton did settle down after some early struggles, making six additional saves in the loss.
Both Hoetzel and Flock were easily the most dangerous Vikes on the afternoon, combining for six shots on goal, while goaltender Stephanie Parker added her seventh shutout of the season in the victory.
With the weekend sweep of their southern Alberta foes and a playoff berth already clinched, Victoria (8-1-3) will set their sights on their outside chance for first place in Canada West, where Trinity Western currently leads by six points at the top. Needing the Trinity Western Spartans to lose both of their remaining matches, and needing to win their final two games, the Vikes' regular season home finale next Sunday against the Spartans could have plenty on the line.
The Dinos (4-7-0) will play out their 'weekend' series tomorrow against the Cascades, before finishing their season on the road against the Manitoba Bisons and the Regina Cougars.
